If room is 12 by 12 , 12 X 12 = 144 square feet.

There are two measurements that apply: the area of the room and the size of the carpet. Area is determined by multiplying length times width, and is expressed in terms of "square measure." Thus, a room that is 9' x 12' is 104 square feet (sq.ft.).
Always round up to the next foot, so, a room that is 8'6"x 11'4" is considered a 9x12 room. Carpet is usually priced by the square yard. To figure your room in square yards, either use yard measures for the length and width, or divide your area in sq. ft. by 9. A 9' x 12' room is 3 yds. x 4 yds = 12 sq. yds. Similarly, dividing 104 sq. ft. by 9 = 12 sq. yds.

Measure "L" or other oddly shaped rooms by adding the areas of their component rectangles.

Carpeting comes on rolls of predetermined widths. The most common widths are 12' and 15' wide. You have to purchase the entire width of the roll. So, if your room is only 9' x 10', you will need to pay for a 9 x 12, if that's how the roll is sized. If you're paying for professional installation, be sure that they leave the remnants, in case you ever need to patch a damaged spot.

The easiest way is to measure the overall width and the length of the room (at the widest and longest points) in feet and fractions, multiply them to get square feet. This will give you a good estimate. If you need to be more exact, measure the irregularities, multiply length times width, and add or subtract from your estimate.

If you are using this to actually buy carpet, then the estimate is the way to go, as it allows you to trim to fit, which appears to be wasting material. But you will be better off tossing pieces out than trying to patch a carpet together.

If you need this for some scholarly exercise, then the exact method would be best.

just measure from the widest width to widest length and multiply the numbers that will give the square foot for rough estimate or draw the room and take to a flooring dealer then they will tell you how much carpet you need or get some one to give a free estimate on some carpet and that way you know how much you need with out costing you any thing they do free estimate all the time

carpet is usually sold by the yard
square footage is measured by multiplying the length by the width with the result being in square measurements

you would measure each room from wall to wall that you plan to carpet with a tape measure. Add all sq.ft. of each room together and that will be the total sq.ft. that you would need. Its also a very good idea to add about 10% to the total area. This allows for those little oops that seem to happen all the time.

Length x Width = Area.

Allow for the fact that carpet often has to be bought in lengths of roll, and that means you may need to buy more than strictly required.

ie If a big room is 18ftx50ft, and the roll width is 20ft, you'd need to buy 50ft of roll, even though you'd waste a 2ft strip all down one side.

You measure your length and width of the room and times it.
