OK, so first I couldn't open the darn thing - I ended up breaking the top off & piercing this balloon like contraption in it. Then we pour it out, it looks nice & golden (Don Julio) but it smells like leftover coke. We take a teeny tiny sip and it definetely tastes like water & coke mixed. Do you think the store will take it back? We got it from Mexico and is NOT a cheap tequila!

You think that you're going to get your money back in Mexico? I've never been... But anywhere that they're sellin chikletts by the gross.... Probably not going to honor your dispute with or without a receipt. Spend the extra twenty bucks and by it in the US. Skip the Julio and go for some Patron or Sauza.

This is a common scam that I have seen many times. It may be that the store you bought it from had purchased the bottle very cheaply from the conman. The con artist will collect or save-up empty spirits bottles and then fill them with water or coloured liquid to resemble the intended alcohol (ie. cold tea for a malt whisky) they then glue the lid to the security seal ring on the neck (hence the difficulty opening it) to give the appearance of an unused bottle. DEFINITELY take the bottle back to where you bought it and demand a refund. If they refuse (and probably even if they agree), you should report them to trading standards or your local police.

In future, check the security seal is attached to the bottle-top by six or seven thin strands of metal, not sealed all the way around.
