A buddy of mine invited me to go onto a cruise for his graduation celebration and I accepted. So this is why I am asking what stuff should I buy for the cruise trip.

You may not need to buy anything special since you can probably wear clothes that you already have. The only exception is if you want to wear a tux on the formal nights. Some people wear a tux and some just wear a suit and tie; and some do not dress up at all.

Here's what a cruise is like. Once you are on ship the staff caters to you, its whatever you want. There is something to do all day every day. When you arrive at the port to check in you (each passenger) will receive a key card which will serve as your room key, charge card for anything you buy on ship (i.e.,drinks, souvenir) and its also your pass to get on and off ship in each port. When you first board the ship the security personnel will have you insert your key card into a scanner and then will take a photo of you that is included in the magnetic strip on the card. Each time you get off ship you will need this key card and many times also a photo ID (passport or driver's license). This card allows them to keep an accurate track of all passengers entering and/or leaving the ship.

Each day of your cruise you will receive in your cabin a "newsletter" listing the time, place and particulars of everything happening for you on ship. There are generally activities like demonstrations of ice carvings, napkin folding and towel folding, and cooking demonstrations. Some ships may offer a galley (kitchen) tour or a tour of the bridge. There may be organized games and other activities around the pools. In the evenings there are generally shows, one show for those with an early dinner seating and another (same show) for those who eat late. There is always food available. Usually there is a place on ship where you can go 24/7 to get something. Or, you can always just pick up the phone in your cabin and order from the room service menu (food is free). If you want, you can order breakfast room service.

All ships have a casino with slots and table games. Ships have movie theaters, generally small but nice, and you can also see movies in your room. They have ATM’s and a purser’s desk where you can cash a check or exchange currency if you need to. There is a tour and activities desk so you can schedule land tours and activities.

Ships have free morning exercise programs, stretching and walking, etc, and on some you can pay for other things like Spinning. All cruise ships have gyms so you can go workout, usually any time from 6:00 AM to late at night. There is usually a walking/running track on one of the decks also. Some ships leave the gym open all night. They call the gyms Spa because they do promote getting pampered with things like wraps and massages with aroma therapy.

There are always pools. Some ships have more than one and the newer ships generally have an indoor pool as well as outdoor ones and all of these have hot tubs. There is generally a basketball court on the top deck, a place for scuffle board, and a mini-golf course. The newer Royal Caribbean ships have a rock climbing wall and the newest one has a pool for water surfing.

There are places on ships to play cards and board games, and the cards and games are provided. If you want to just sit and read, there’s a library where you can bring your books or select one from the shelf. Ships have internet cafes and some offer WIFI if you bring your prefer to use your computer in your cabin (some ships offer notebooks for rent). There are cocktail lounges that feature a variety of music. Some have a piano bar with jazz. There is usually a disco that starts after 10:00 PM each night and last until everyone leave. On certain days ships will have special activities like a chocolate lovers buffet, or a midnight deck party .

The dress all day up to 6:00 Pm is casual with shorts, swim wear, sandals, etc acceptable most places. After 6:00 PM the dress is sports casual; kinda like what you would wear to work in an office. So you may need a suit, casual clothes, swim clothes, gym clothes if you wanna workout, and your usual toiletries. Make sure you have comfortable walking shoes. If you are going to the caribbean be sure to take sun screen; if you are going to Alaska, take a jacket, hat and gloves (its cold when you get to the glaciers).

There isn't much you need to bring. Depending on whether its a 7 day cruise or shorter, there will be one or two nights where you have to dress up. So a suit. If the cruise is going somewhere warm bring suncreen because out in the middle of the ocean the sun reflects off the water. Everything else you need to bring is common sense, enjoy the cruise!

Men can rent tuxedos for formal night, so you don't have to bring one. Depending on where the cruise is going will determine what you need. Cruises up to New England in May could be chilly so you would want a sweater or long pants. Bahamas and Bermuda dictate shorts.

I see you've got a few answers below, so I hope I'm not reiterating here...

but buy your own snorkel equipment here to save you lots of bucks. Snorkeling is the best thing out there to do on the islands and if you own your own, it's free! Just get off the ship. Find a taxi and ask the taxi driver to take you to...a beach with a bar, a beach with good snorkeling....a beach with nude women...or whatever your desires. Then ask the taxi man to pick you up at the beach at say...3 p.m. and he'll be there. Bring him some tip money. That's how they live.

Oh, and don't forget a towel and plenty of suits (at least two).

And if you're going to be gone all day....pick up an extra apple or banana or two at the breakfast line to bring with you if you end up on a beach that hardly anyone goes to.

have fun though! :)

How long and where is the cruise?

Bring at least two pair of swim outfits no matter if you are male or female. bring one formal type of wear as you might have a formal night.

Bring drammamine, they will have them on the ship BUT it will cost you.

Go and get a VISA TravelMoney card. It is like a travelers cheque but in a credit card that is not tied to your account in case it gets lost. DO NOT get an american express travelers card, it only caused my fiance and I a lot of stress because NOONE took it where we went. Make sure you take some cash when you leave the ship. On ship you will be using your "seapass" card, that is your card for your room as well as onboard credit card. DO NOT LOSE THAT.

If you are going to be at sea for a long time, buy the soda coupon. Its about $6 a day on the ship I was on but well worth it. We were at sea for 2 1/2 days and in port for one day.

Alcohol will bite you in the butt for costs, so be prepared for that.

Make sure you have room in your bags for souvenirs.

Check tripadvisor for the area you are going for ideas for excursions.

Make sure you bring hand sanitizer, suntan lotion, advil, drammamine.

If you are cruising in the sunny, warm climates pack light.. You will need some formal wear because they have formal nights on the ship (shirt, tie, jacket, dress pants) Sunscreen, money or credit card (in case you want to buy souvenirs on board or at ports of call) and a healthy appetite the food is amazing.

Things you will need:
- All your personal hygiene products
- Enough clothes for the cruise or bring laundry detergent and dryer sheets cause this is expensive on the boat.
-You may need to bring a suit if you guys are going to the main dining room since most don't appreciate shorts and t-shirt (I don't go there.... I'm on vacation not going to a business dinner in my opinion)
-Money; casino... need I say more?
-Credit limit is okay- if you are going to be drinking alcohol on board make sure you have the cash available to back it up.
- Enjoy it.

Clothingwise, you should bring the appropriate stuff for the weather in your ports of call and the seas you'll be sailing. You'll also need a good suit for formal nights.

Be sure to have a good camera on hand to record your trip, as well as something for seasickness if you're prone to it, or are not quite sure how your stomach will fare.
