The best is to strive for a balance, to do what you need to on the physical to sustain you on your spiritual journey.
I figure this is why many a spiritual seeker has gone off to live off the land, they have less attachments to impede their spiritual journey that way.

Won't you be surprised when, after you leave this plane of existence, that none of the concerns you have in this "reality" really don't matter? Life is a stepping stone to our ultimate goal which is death. In death a new life is awakend. The tool we have in reality to deal with life is our conscious and really that's it..everything else is a falsehood. Think about it...everything in life is judged by your perspective and the perspective of others. What you think is being poor...a homeless person sees as riches. Everything in life is based on perception and therefore creates a disallusioned reality. What you see isn't what others see.

I'm spiritually rich but I have an illness that means I need to cope with prolonged periods of pain and my spirituality is partly a coping mechanism to help me deal with it. I think being in any kind of suffering almost obliges one to take a more spiritual outlook on life.

I trust in god and let him look after me. I don't have any money, and yet i never seem to miss out on anything. I have everything i need, and i even somehow manage to travel the world. I think maybe in some strange way it does pay the bills.
I know a few other people who have similar experiences and live very well.

No, if you are spiritual you must remain so. Taking up too much materialism would be like swallowing a slow low dose of poison over the years. It wouldn't work for me. The WORD says that if we seek the kingdom of God and its righteousness, all things will be added unto us and it is true. Take care of God's business and He has promised to fulfill all our needs according to His riches in glory. But if you stay on the fence, then you suffer and struggle. NO, soul seeking is not a waste of time especially if you know that we are eternal souls whose time on earth is just but a breath in the life of an eternal God.

Belief in Jesus doesn't pay the bills either, certainly not healthcare,
This all depends on the economy and your brand of government,
so Jesus freak or not,
if you are poor and get sick in America, you are up sh*t's creek without a paddle either way.
THat's a fact jack.

Course it does, look at televangelists. They perform miracles (those involving turning the generous pennies donated by broke, desperate individuals into 30 room mansions). All you have to do is take advantage of the 'one born every minute' phenomenum.

What is physical is temporary.
What is spiritual is permanent.
What little I have in this world is enough for now...my true treasure is Jesus Christ.

Being spiritual is not a license not to work for your livelihood the best you can.
