In 1920 Bal Gangadhar Tilak died after returning from exile in Burma and the Congress under the leadership of M.K.Gandhi could not match the opposition by the Muslim League for an undivided independent India. At that time, Dr. Kesab Baliram Hedgewar a dedicated Congress leader from Nagpur tried to bring back Sri Aurobindo from Pondichery to lead the Nation in her struggle for freedom. But Sri Aurobindo declined and advised Dr. Hedgewar to organise the youth to strenghten the Hindu society. Dr.Hedgewar conceived of an organisation comprising all among Hindus who can volunteer to work for the motherland and rebuild the nation to revive and regain its lost glory based on Sanatana culture. He conceived of a voluntary organisation to build real patriots on the path shown by Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo who can be examples in the society to lead a selfless life dedicated for the cause of the motherland. So in 1925, the RSS was started and till 1940 its founder could succeed in having highly determined and dedicated colleagues including M.S.Golwalkar an M.Sc. and LL.B. degree holder and spiritually elevated personality.

From 1940, till 1973 it is Parama Pujya Sri Golwalkar, more popular as Guruji who led the organisation during the worst time of its growth and service for the motherland during testing times such as partition, Kashmir issue, Chinese aggression and various natural calamities. Later, it was his successor Sri Balasaheb Deoras who continued the unfinished task and rescued the nation during emergency. Since inception the RSS has grown into a disciplined voluntary body for promotion of world peace, harmony and rebuilding of India into a leading nation in the international community. Within the country, for upliftment of the down trodden and the indigent it has many service oriented NGOs active in the tribal areas and other backward provinces.

In nutshell, the RSS is a man buiding school where true Indians with love for the nation and the strength of character, are made for dedication to the cause of rebuilding of the nation. Every Indian irrespective of his or her religious faith must have love and allegiance for the motherland, and should be prepared to rebuild oneself for the National Reconstruction.

Discipline in the RSS cadre is intended for character building and all round development of the personality of each volunteer, so that he is self sufficient to work in a field to which he is best suited to benefit the nation and the society. It is wedded to the high ideals of Vedic culture and the eternal principles of a changing society. It believes in the entire mankind as one family and shuns organised religions who have been killing each other; and therefore it is against any conversion to any other religion. It respects all faiths and insists that everyone has a birth right to pursue his faith to the best of his ability without interfering in others faith.

RSS is very disciplined. It is its strength and also the weakness. Due to high standards of discipline it is not increasing in number during recent years. As far as my experience goes the RSS is the biggest NGO in the world to serve the poor, the needy and the down trodden in the society. It did a great relief work during post-Sunami in the south and great cyclones in Orissa in 1999. It helps Christians and Muslims also. Unlike, Mother Teresa, after giving help it does not convert people to Hinduism. For the nation, it has been working since partition days.

I am proud of RSS which has thousands of Pracharaks or Organisers besides millions of volunteers whole over the world who have dedicated their lives for the reconstruction of India on the ideals of cultural nationalism. India is on its march to emerge as a global power with one identity that is Hindutwa or Indianness as taught by the RSS.

It is very disciplined so far as its main ideal of organising Hindus is concerned. So much so that it did not spare even L.K.Advani, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India who by one statement deviated from its avowed purpose of reunited India in which he remarked that Pakistan is an irreversible fact of history. Advani had to pay his political career for such a slip-off. RSS is very disciplined but for common man, it looks more communal as if it is only for the Hindus in India which has so many faiths by conversion for last 300 years at least, under patronage of the foreign rulers.

RSS is the only organization which is uniting the disorganized Indians on the basis of Hinduism or Indian culture. But the politicians are against it in India because its popularity is benefiting only one political party in India. Otherwise, as 'ashok_' has aptly put it above, RSS is the only organization which is making Indians aware of their 'cultural nationalism'.

I honestly don't know very much about RSS, but from what I've heard, I can't say I agree with all of its goals because inherently it is a pro-Hindu movement, which kind of goes against all Hindu philosophy about living in harmony with everyone (there is a verse in the Atharva Veda that demonstrates this). India is one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, with surprisingly little conflict among its different religious constituents, why change it?
