so you can record more than one track at a time.
ex. drum set needs to be recorded
track 1 kick
track 2 snare
track 3 high hat
track 4 toms
you get the picture.

the reason is that you would be able to edit or mix any tracks w/o affecting the rest of the components. example you feel that you need a second voice on that particular sequence of the you may do so by recording the would be singer on another track of the recorder then after mixing it you may still want to remove or incorporate all together for the final trasfer to stereo effect recorder.
