We have a 1 yr old son who used to have a great appetite. Now for some reason, he just hates to eat. We recently started him on regular homogeneous milk and whenever it come time for yum yum, he simply rejects it. He used to enjoy baby foods (jarred) such as fruits, veggies and chicken, but now he simply closes his mouth or spits it out. We're worried he's going to lose weight... Anyone experience something similar with their child, and if so, any recommendations?

Thank you kindly!

I like smellyfoots answer. I hope it is as simple as that. Good luck with trying that. Find out what mom's feed their kids these days when they're just starting out on people food. Probably really tiny bites.

Maybe there's a connection to the homogenous milk and his lack of appetite. Does the milk have growth hormones? Try avoiding milk for a very short period and/or try different kinds (skim or lowfat or from a healthfood store or combine with his formula) or a brand that says on the package, no bovine growth hormones used.

I've rarely heard of kids having a chromosome missing in their DNA, and that can cause the infant to have no concept of eating and refuse to eat. It would seem that would have already been determined in your son by now though.

Try getting away from the jarred foods and offer him small pieces of whatever you're eating. He's at an age where he can pick things up himself, and probably wants to feed himself. There's probably going to be somewhat of a mess involved (if you have a dog, the dog will be your son's BEST friend EVER now!) but it'll ease the battles at mealtime. Keep offering him different textures and varieties of foods - if he's hungry, he'll eat.

Meanwhile, you can give him some Pediasure to supplement him calorie-wise.

Well, baby food is pretty gross, and if he's getting teeth, he needs something to chew on and something that tastes better.
Also, babies like food they can pick up themselves. Try some cut up soft bananas, Cheerios, green beans, soft macaronis, soft cooked carrots, anything he won't choke on. My kids even liked teething on leftover pizza crust. Pretty gross, but they loved them.
As for the milk, try splitting it half-and -half with the formula, if he's used to that, and keep substituting a little more milk every day until eventually, you have him drinking all milk. Milk tastes a lot different from formula.
And don't make a big deal out of him not eating. Once you find something he likes, he'll eat a lot of it. One of my kids wanted nothing but macaroni and cheese all the time. I even had to leave a bowl out for Santa.
If you're worried about the vegetables and nutrients, you can play this little trick on your kid...puree the carrots and cook them in with spaghetti sauce or with mac and cheese. He won't even know they're there.
But give up on that baby food idea. Sounds like your son is just hungry for something else.

Well, he won't starve, he'll eat eventually. Kids that age definitely go through an independent stage and I would try giving him foods that are "people food" that he can't choke on. At that age, my daughter loved bits of baked french fries, waffles, green beans (they also make toddler diced jar foods), etc. Try that but just be careful about choking hazards (such as chunks of meat, etc.). Keep offering food of a variety and eventually he'll eat it. What does the pediatrician feel about it?

Most kids go through stages, I have 5 kids and they have times they wont stop eating because they are growing and then they dont eat alot because they stopped growing. I would talk to your pediatrician though. Also try freh food like mashed potatos or applesauce and etc. steam veggies then mash them slightly. Baby food is nasty. Just dont add salt or pepper. As they get older some of my kids went through a no meat stage to.

At 1 year old they are stiving to be independant. Chances are he doesn't want to eat baby food anymore. My son is 14 1/2 months and has never been on baby food. He has always had the same foods we are eating. Give him finger foods. Soft cooked carrot cubes, cubed avacado, peaches, grated apple, cucumber slices, sweet potato cubes. The opportunities are endless.

Maybe he wants to eat what you are eating - you know, "real" food. Maybe if you make him think that you like baby food, then he will too.
