Sheriffs officers and Police officers all have the same duties. With a few differences. They both have to attend the same Police Academy and both have the same certifications. The Sheriffs Dept. is a county wide agency which means that they are county employees and can be assigned to any municipality or city within that county. They also staff the courts and jails (in some states). Municipal police officers work for the municipality in which they were hired and only patrol that municipality. in most states the sheriffs dept. is actually considered the third top law enforcement agency in the state, ahead of the municipal police departments. And lastly the position of head sheriff is usually an elected position and that individual does not have to have a law enforcement background nor does he have to be academy trained.

Really the biggest difference is that the Sheriff is in charge of counties and is elected. The police force is in control of specific cities, and are hired for the position. Thw sheriff also often has to run the county jails and courts in some areas.

In the state of Massachusetts, the sheriffs department throughout this state are charged with the welfare, safety and lockup of detainees inside thier jail. They are charged with the transportation of prisoners to and from court back to thier facility. They do NOT go to any police academy like the town, city and or state police do. They do have thier own PRIVATE training facility within thier house of correction to train those wanting to become correctional officers and or deputy sheriffs. However, they do NOT have any powers of arrest anywhere in this state of Massachusetts. They CANNOT patrol any areas ON THIER OWN unless called in by the local police departments for extra assistance. However, this is very rare ! They CANNOT pull you over for any traffic moving violations as they do NOT study chapter 90 therefor they are NOT certified to do so. Nor can they do any criminal investigations other than inside thier lockup facility. The ONLY power of arrest that they do have is if the judge issues a warrant to apprehend and the sheriff and or his deputies are charged with the order of apprehension. Other than that, in this commonwealth, they are NOT police. Nowhere in this state will the sheriffs department show up at your house for a domestic dispute, or an officer of the law needed on site. Again, in Massachusetts, they are NOT police officers.
