My 21 month old was complaining of a sore ear yesterday, So my mother told me to get him some Sweet Oil, and put a drop or two in, and that it should take the pain away. Well, Last night, I did just that and he seems fine this morning, OTHER than, The ear I put the sweet oil in looks DISGUSTING. It looks like it's full of blood, Only it's earwax ( I think)...

And I mean, His little ear is completely full....it's like whatever it is, Is overflowing out of his little ear.

It's a dark orange'ish color???

Is this what sweet oil is supposed to do?

If the earache is gone then I doubt it is an infection. Doctors now do a wait and see thing and don't always treat an ear infection with antibiotics. Feel free to call your doctor to ask for their advise on what you should do. I would give the child a warm bath and clean his ears as you normally would. The oil is to coat the ear and that is what makes it stop hurting.

My mother did the same thing, only with olive oil.

It's a old houswive's remedy that I've found does very little. In theory, it's supposed to loosen the ear wax. But it can become a breeding ground for infection because the ear is warm and moist inside.

Get the child to the doctor. An earache could be an ear infection and they can start pretty rapidly with small children and become an inner ear infection. As a child I had a number of ear infections and so did my kids. They are can be serious in that they may harm your child's hearing and they are very painful and can cause scarring and other problems if you do not attend to them right. I'd be concerned with the blood in the wax--your child may be pulling on his ear causing scratching or the ear could be so full that the ear drum has burst, making it more painful. If it goes to the inner ear, your child will have balance problems until it's cleared up.

A good round of antibiotics will cure the problem!! Get your child to a doctor soon! It may not be an infection but it's always best to check out.

it sounds like ear infection and will need drops to clear this up. i have had this problem with my little girl and is on going i was told to do the same put warm olive oil into the ear with cotton wool and this did nothing apart from make the problem worse with cotton wool being lodge in her ear drum. her ear gets so bad the infection runs out of her ear and makes the outer ear very sore. the best advise take him to the doctors good luck

Sweetoil is an old fashioned remedy... I will assume that it has "rinsed" some of the blockage to where you can see it... however... it's not going to clear up an infection... especially if the infection is deep into the ear canal (middle or inner ear). Take your little guy to the doctor so they can check him out better, give him an antibiotic if necessary, or just say that it's extra wax build up... but please... BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY... if an ear infection doesn't get treated well.. it can cause SERIOUS damage!

Take him to the Doctor. I have used olive oil and the orange coloring is not a threat. Just infection working its way out. but his ear will need to be flushed. and checked to find what the cause was in the first place.

Get him to the doctor. Did that with my youngest once and his eardrum ruptured. We had to put meds in ear for weeks to get the eardrum to heal. Don't know for sure what the stuff is but doesn't seem right.
