Without language, we would not have the ability to discuss theology or transmit information about our beliefs (or for that matter, disagree about them).

Without language, what need would we have for a God?

It's 1/3 of the answer. Modern adaptive psychology tells us that humans subconsciously calculate the value of everything relative to their well being so they must apply a "meaning" to everything. Well, unless you actually understand the science behind everything, your mind will fabricate a "meaning." For many things meaning requires an explanation, but when the normal meaning either can't be found or accepted, a stop-gap will be fabricated to allow the mind to stop dwelling on it and allow the person to concentrate on more important things. As human societies developed and societies became more efficient as far as acquiring food, they had more time to think about those more broad meanings. Obviously, abstract thought requires language, but one must have the prerequisites of the need to find meaning and the time to think about it. The history of God is one in which He fills the gaps in our search for meaning, just an ordinary function of the brain. As science progresses in its explanation of the universe, the role of God decreases to the more conceptually difficult subjects. Remember, god used to take a daily chariot ride across the sky.

A thought provoking question but I don't think that it is the reason. Language is a part of communicating with each other, so that is essential. I believe God communicates with us through the scriptures. We have the 5 senses as most creatures do, but we have the ability of conscience unlike them. I think being born in Gods image according to his likeness means we have His attributes of love, wisdom, ,justice and power, and if we reflect those qualities( even though we are imperfect and inclined to do wrong) he is pleased with us. That's where our conscience comes into play. So the reason we have God is to know him and his ways and try to live up to his standards as best we can, then we will give Him glory. After all He gave us life.

Circle, Rectangle, Triangle: Do I have your attention?

Without language? Are we talking about symbols, or feelings, or both in the form of "sign" language? Or animal signals?

Would you consider "Is God the reason we have language"?

Funk and Wagnals define "religion" as a fixation.

I can hypnotize a chicken by using a "symbol" that will cause it to become fixated. Does that mean, it has the ability to worship God?

(PS: Keep working on that circle, rectangle, triangle puzzle.)

Nope - the two are unrelated. Without language we could not communicate about anything, but that is an independent topic from our need to believe in god.

no God is the reason we have language
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, it was void and without form and darkness was on the face of the deep.
And God said when God said language was born

As cavepeople, our ancestors all grunted and snorted. each and each group or tribe created their own language for which grunt or snicker meant which component. the story of the tower of babel is contained in the bible for an extraordinarily good reason. some historic midsection jap dude wrote it. it rather is oftentimes how memories get in books.

If we didn't have language, there would be no reason for logic and scientific conclusions either..

The reason that we have a God is due to our inability to fully explain and prove without any doubt, and to comprehend our existence and the Universe we are in.
