In 2006 we paid back taxes for a few years. Can you deduct the total amount for 2006 or do you need to file an ammended tax return for the specific year the tax was owed.

Property taxes, medical bills, etc; the deduction is taken for the year in which they are actually paid. No amended or anything like that. If you paid back property taxes in 2006 then they are deductible on your 2006 tax return.
