A couple of different things are good: Ground meat cooked and added to bean mixture.
Smoked ham, bacon or ham hock

Cook the meat in with the beans-it seasons the beans as well. You can use bacon, ham, a ham bone, hamhocks, polish sausage, or even neck bones or ribs. Venison is also good. It depends on the type of meat you prefer.

From a country cooking perspective bacon actually goes in with the beans while they cook. My mother and grandmother always did that. Beyond that, I would recommend pot roast, though you are dealing with a long cooking time for all of that if you planned to start from scratch.

LOL .... I had that the other night and I love Kielbasa with it
