From a Hindu perspective, the pain of yogic austerities usually results in great spiritual progress. However, there are ways to make progress with relatively little pain, such as bhakti yoga. The only pain there is the pain of separation from the Divine, which is the driving force to make spiritual progress.

Pain definitely has a close relationship with spiritual growth. I have experienced this in my life, as have Christians throughout the millenia. It is no coincidence that the Church grows and prospers spiritually during times of persecution. Yet, during times of material prosperity, there is division and scandal.

I don't think so. Much spiritual progress can be made withut pain.
