Well, the British conquered the North East of the USA. Later they acquired Florida and the Louisiana, made war to Mexico to steal half of the country, forbidding the use of Spanish to the Mexicans who stayed in their lands, moved to the West, seizing the Native Americans' lands, killing many of them when they tried to defend their territories, putting the survivors in reservations.
Now, Spanish speaking people are immigrating to the USA by the thousands, legally or illegally, giving the english speakers a taste of their own medicine. They don't seem to like it

The English settled primarily in the Eastern part of the country, although there were Spanish settlements in Florida and the Southwest before the pilgrims even arrived in the US.
The English settlers wrote the early documents for the founding of the US, and created a capital when creating America. Since they led that, English was their language of choice. They either annexed, or took via wars other parts of what is now the 50 states, and those areas (Louisiana, Hawaii, New Mexico, etc.) have all had to learn/use English although there's not an official language in the US. In some states, they may have bilingual rules since large numbers of people may still speak more native tongues than English.

While a lot of the immigrants were from other European countries that didn't speak English, the original colonies were settled by English speaking people.
Most other European immigrants didn't come to the US until the mid-1800's, long after English had become the normal language.
By-the-way. . . the US doesn't have an official language. Congress never got around to settling on one.

S., and created a capital even as springing up u.s.. using reality they led that, English replaced into their language of determination. They both annexed, or took by ability of wars different factors of what's now the 50 states, and those factors (Louisiana, Hawaii, New Mexico, etc.) have all had to envision/use English in spite of the reality that there is no longer an authentic language interior the U. In some states, they'd have bilingual rules using reality tremendous numbers of persons might want to opt to in spite of the undeniable fact that talk more effective community tongues than English.

That's not quite right. English was the main language of the 13 colonies which made up the core of the original U.S. The people from there spread west and took their language with them. Meanwhile, immigrants from other countries were the minority upon arriving and learned the new language.

There was a vote and it was only english by a single vote. They did not make it into law because so many people didn't speak english they decided not to force them to change.
