ceiling texture, this is blown on you can buy this a HD or LOWe's
they also make a paint that you roll on this is good for touch up and larger spots , and then there is a can you use for really small spots but this is extremely messy.
The joint compound is also called sheetrock mud the first thing is to tape and embed run a layer of mud kinda heauy thick place the tape at the joints then slide your knife to squeeie off the excess not all of it . let dry, for a day next day mix a little water with the mud and make it think creamy and put another layer as on the first coat and go slightly wider than the first coat, make it as smooth as possible., let dry ,the third and final coat, add alittle more water making it really creamy not runnie but less than the second coat repeat as first and sec coat , let dry , then sand until you are smooth and even don;t go to the dry wall tape,
lighty sand the high spots inbetween coats
Use a 6 inch knife
then a 8 inch then a 12 inch knife
Good luck

the regular compound weighs 61 lbs/bucket. and dries slower. the light weight weighs about half that and dries faster. both spread, taper and finish the same. no difference at all. but due to quicker drying time, the light weight requires you to be a little faster and more accurate when placing it. my honest opinion....if you are healthy and in good shape buy regular. it is cheaper. if heavy lifting is hard for you buy the light weight.
