Just curious, wondering if it's illegal to be a scavenger of sorts

How about taking parts from a car that is abandoned as a result of theft and has been reported? Does it still classify in the category of theft? (in a way, to me at least, it seems less serious because you're technically the scavenger of what the predator has left behind)

Hate to sound like a wise guy, but the crime is called THEFT where I come from. Taking property that isn't yours.
How do you know for certain the car is abandoned? I've owned a fews cars in my life that looked abandoned any time you saw them,
If you had a bicycle on your back porch, & I noticed it had never moved from that spot for a year, does that mean it's abandoned? or that I have any right to take all or part of it?
Now ya know!! Hang in there....& don't do the crime if ya can't do the time!!

Under Sec 378 of Penal Code, Whoever, intending to take dishonestly any movable property out of the possession of any person without that person’s consent, moves that property in order to such taking, is said to commit theft.
Thus, if the abandoned car belong to someone, it's considered theft. In the case where the ownership cannot be traced, it's still can be an offence under Sec 403 of Penal Code "Dishonest misappropriation of property".

Whether the car was stolen or not, the car and the parts that belong on the car do not belong to you. If you take anything from that car without permission from the owner, even no one knows who the owner is, you are commiting an act of theft of property.

It is illegal to take parts off of an abandoned car that isn't yours, unless you have permission. This is called stealing. If the car is your own, then it is perfectly fine.

If the car isn't yours than yes, it is stealing. Visit the junkyard if you are looking for spare parts.
