and vacuuming and combing carpet wkly...in different directions each time...and shoes off

keep a sign on door of "please remove shoes" like the Japanese or Muslims do routinely. Invest in a good carpet shampooer and use it regularly. Have rules about food in the carpeted areas, set down extra throw rugs if having company, or kids over. Don't have pets if possible!
Keep a carpet spot cleaner spray handy at all times so you can treat spills promptly. Choose a good brand and a proper color-not white!

Depends by the doors I use runners also if its wall to wall try a area carpet....
