My dog was like that too. He went down porch steps maybe because it could see the end. To go down basement steps, we had to stay 2 stairs ahead and literally TEACH him to walk down stairs. They'll fall, but just pick them up and use cam, encouraging words. Sometimes having a puppy is like having a baby! Good Luck!

My Shih Tzu used to not be able to go down or up stairs. I think that you will understand your puppy if you try to go down your basement stairs on all fours. It is VERY scary. You will need to put your puppy in the middle of the stairs. Then he will probably climb up so you put him at about five steps up the stairs. Treats and praise will urge you puppy will urge your puppy down. Before you do this, however, you need to go on all fours and try to go down the stairs. Good luck!

Every dog we've ever had has been scared of the basement stairs, but would go upstairs. Why do you need the puppy to go into the basement? If she's scared of it, just let her be.

You didn't say what breed of puppy you have but with some breeds it is better that they never do stairs. It can hurt their back very badly.

Your steps to basement are prob. bare wood or concrete and she prob is unsure of her footing on them and slips on them. Somehow she must be able to grip the porch ones. Don't force her to do steps she's afraid of. She could injure herself.

Maybe they're too slippery for her, my dog wouldn't go up the stairs untill we put carpet on them.
