I'm asking this, since Marshall is superneedy and wants to be petted 24/7, along with having full freedom, since we let him (and Wylie) have it on Monday. Is there a way, so I can get my writing and work done, when we both be satisfied? Wylie is needy, but have taken strident steps to go outside of the room and even to mine. Until both cats can get along, (for we're pushing them this weekend, before we make a decision soon, depending on how this weekend goes), they'll have partial freedom. The most I've given Marshall is 4-6 hours before I need downtime for myself. I know he loves me and wants to be with me. I love him and want to be with him too. But not all the time. I yelled at him yesterday, because he wanted more last night, for he had enough. (Yesterday morning he escaped into my room, since he was making racket and gave me bad sleep.) He was ticked and left me after my visit with him and Wylie in the room. But things are sort-of okay now, even when he cried this morning.

Grace, I meant that we keep the cats in there for safety, since they haven't gotten along with my cat . . . yet. I visit them at least three times a day, and give them partial freedom, until they get along with my cat. I asked on how to make Marshall less needy so I can get back to work and writing.

Hobbes, it's not Wylie. It's my cat Sweet Pea. Wylie is his brother and get along fine. It's my cat they don't get along with. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question, are you saying that you keep them locked in one room all day long and only let them out for a few hours a day?...if that's the case, then that's more than likely the problem.
If they are always with you and allowed to go from room to room they aren't always going to want your attention.

If you keep them locked in one room and only let them out for 4 to 6 hours a day you're always going to have that problem.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your question.

Give it time, he'll adjust. Once Marshall bonds with Wylie they'll probably be best buds and will be satisfied with having each others companionship sometimes. It sounds like they will always be really attached to you though, which is great. Don't yell at him because he insists on being around you, it'll just confuse him. Marshall sounds like a sweet, loving cat. He will build the confidence eventually to not want to be by you every second of the day.

I have had many cats over the years. I have brought new cats (usually not kittens) into my house. As long as you are home, they should be together. Only separate them when you are not there. Keep a spray bottle of water. Let them argue, hiss, growl etc. Only step in when the fight is really happening. Give them a squirt of water. They will stop fighting, I promise you. But, only let them be together when you are there to break up a fight if need be. If you are gone, separate them until they are indeed getting along.

Before allowing your cat to socialize with the other try putting something like tuna juice on the cat that is the most social. The least social SHOULD approach the other to lick him clean, thus making friends. This has worked for me in the past. Good Luck. I know exactly what you are going through.

Give him more attention, play with him, cuddle him off and on throughout the day. When you are busy, keep something he enjoys playing with nearby to offer him and offer him a treat now and then - it can even just be a piece of his kibble, but from your hand - it makes a difference.

maybe get your cat a bed so it has its own spot, and maybe a stuffed animal to snuggle with when your not available or busy. use a cage or a gate to intoduce the cats slowly without injuries you have to remember the 2 cats are invading your cats territory so be patient
