My husband is 44 and was just diagnosed. He just completed additional bloodwork and xrays. At his next appointment in one week we are suppose to discuss treatment options. Any advice?

Treatment
The American College of Rheumatology has defined (1987) the following criteria for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis:
* Morning stiffness of >1 hour.
* Arthritis and soft-tissue swelling of >3 of 14 joints/joint groups
* Arthritis of hand joints
* Symmetric arthritis
* Subcutaneous nodules in specific places
* Rheumatoid factor at a level above the 95th percentile
* Radiological changes suggestive of joint erosion
At least four criteria have to be met to establish the diagnosis, although many patients are treated despite not meeting the criteria.
Pharmacological treatment of RA can be divided into disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), anti-inflammatory agents and analgesics. DMARDs have been found to produce durable remissions and delay or halt disease progression. In particular they prevent bone and joint damage from occurring secondary to the uncontrolled inflammation. This is important as such damage is usually irreversible. Anti-inflammatories and analgesics improve pain and stiffness but do not prevent joint damage or slow the disease progression.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.

If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.

Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.

And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.

I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.

It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.

Today, I want to do the same for you!

I have RA... the first thing is to make sure your doc is treating you for you, not just by the textbook. docs will first start out with the small guns... anti inflammatories and maybe short stints on steroids... I was on steroids for about 2 years before better drugs were introduced. If after a month or 2 things are still not good ( depends on how bad the RA is) they may start DMARDS (disease modifiying antirheumatic drugs) like plaquenil or sulfasalizine (which i am allergic to, so i found out the hard way)... they may also create a "cocktail" of drugs to take.. I was Dxd about 6 years ago, so i have had lots of different drugs, too many to list.. but i am currently on methotrexate and a biologic injectable, enbrel, along with a few others. These drugs can all have side effects, but so far everyone i know can stand the side effects for the drugs they are on, and if it werent for these drugs, i would not be walking today!

there is a good website that has lts of friendly people to discuss things with.. i am on it... 4ratalk.com... check it out for yourself or your husband.. lots of information and support there!

Hey,
Sciatica is a pain that results from irritation of one of sciatic nerves. This is a lower back pain that goes down to hip and then to both legs extending to feet and toes in some cases. Sciatica nerve is the largest nerve in our body. Running down the spine through the hip, sciatic nerve goes down to knee and ankle. Any damage or pressure on this nerve results in debilitating sciatica pain that needs thorough investigation of probable causes on the basis of symptoms to provide relief to the patient on a permanent basis.
