will an airline allow me to stopover in Thailand for more than a day?

Most flights from Australia to the US take the Pacific route via Los Angeles. Bangkok is definitely not on the way so you can't stop over there.

However, if you specifically ask to be routed via Europe, it largely depends on the airline you are flying with. BA, Virgin, AA, Qantas and of course Thai and Eva all offer Bangkok stopovers.

Yeah I know flights that go from Sydney to NY go through Auckland and Tahiti if you fly Air Tahiti, so it's going to depend on what airline you take.

You might be able to arrange something through you travel agent, but as someone already said, it is kinda out of the way as most flights go down towards NZ, then fly across Mexico and up to NY if they have a pacific stopover, but it could end up costing you WAY more than if you just flew from Melbourne to NY.

Talk to your travel agent, they'll be able to quote you on how much extra it will cost you :)
