All praise is due to Allah and peace and blessings be upon the beloved Prophet Muhammad.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah loves the act of sneezing and dislikes the act of yawning. If any one of you sneezes and praises Allah, it is a duty on every Muslim who hears him to say ‘Yarhamak Allah (May Allah have mercy on you).’ As for yawning, it is from Shaytaan, so if any of you feels the urge to yawn, let him resist it as much as he can, for if any of you yawns, the Shaytan laughs at him." (al-Bukhari, Fath, no. 6226)

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If any of you feels the urge to yawn, let him resist it as much as possible, lest the Shaytan enter his mouth." (Imaam Ahmad)

According to another report also narrated by Imaam Ahmad, Shaytaan enters when a person yawns. (Saheeh al-Jaami’, 426)

From the reports quoted above, we may summarize the following:

1. That Shaytaan prompts the human to yawn, which is indicative of laziness and sluggishness.
2. That Shaytaan enters the person who yawns.
3. That Shaytaan laughs at man and makes fun of his ugly appearance when he is in that state.

The person who is praying must take care of the following:

1. He should resist yawning.
2. He should cover his mouth
3. He should suppress his voice (not make a sound).

Allah knows best.

I'm not so sure but then, growing up as a Muslim, it was more of a tradition to cover your mouth (not to avoid) when yawning cos it was believed that Satan can enter one's body (soul) if the mouth is kept opened. Once Satan entered your body (soul) it is often said that you could be 'brainwashed' by Satan, in other words you may get lazy from doing your obligations to God eg. Satan might persuade you to do sins instead of goods.

Yawning in many traditions is thought to allow demons into the body. There are similar stories in a great many mythologies.

This is from hadeeth.

See, when people cant play around with the quran, they invent supersitious hadeeth like this one to put wierd practices and beliefs into the religious system.

This hadeeth has no basis and is therefore not taken seriously by educated muslims such as myself.

On a lighter note: you should cover your mouth when yawning ^^ its rude not to
