Let me try to answer this.

Flash Button:- Flash button sends the signal to telephone exchange to 'hold' the existing call to perform another action.

But why do we need 'Flash':- Flash is required for several services - most common are:-

1. 3 Way calling
2. Call waiting
3. Conference call
4. Call transfer

For example for 3 Way calling, following sequence is used

1. Dial first subscriber
2. Once call is established and conversation starts - hit FLASH
3. Dial second number
4. When second subscriber answers hit FLASH again

3 way call is established.

Second part of question:- 3 Way calling means three parties can have conference. For 4 way calling or 5 way calling - you need Conference Call. However there is also a limit on how many people can be connected in one conference.

Yeah.! You picked up the phone. Put three pennies in the slot and then dialled. My parent's number was AMH 2895. AMH stood for Amhurst. Every London borough had it's own code. The phone rang and when you heard the 'hello.?' you pushed the A Button. No reply, you pushed the B Button and got your pennies back. The telephone boxes were all painted red (in India, they still are..!) The phone weighed a ton and was a heavy black colour. Nothing fancy. Emergency calls were 999. Scotland Yard, the London Police Headquarters, was WHI (Whitehall) 1212. Dial O for Operator. That was Directory Enquiries. If you had an address and a name, they would give you the number. I never knew my Dad had an accent until I heard him for the first time on the phone. He came over from Russia when he was 15. He said, 'See or the buses are still running..' He always swopped 'or' for 'if.'

Flash button is used to keep an ongoing call on hold and give you an option to do another action as provided by the your service provider like a 3/4 way call or call transfer to another number or any other facility.

On my phone the flash button is used to put one person on hold while you take a second call from call waiting, then I hit it again to return to the first caller.

Flash button is used to transfer the received call to another phone, where the person to answer the call is sitting. But this fecility works, only, when it is provided by your service provider.

It is only for putting someone on hold while you have another call coming in or the put someone on hold while you call the third person (three way calling), that's it.
