Yahoo is featuring an article today that states it is a crime to cheat on your spouse in Michigan. Michigan residents could face up to life in prison for extra-marital affairs. I know that throughout history "cheaters" have faced some pretty severe consequences, including death (John 8:3-5), but what are your thoughts regarding government overseeing and enforcing marital vows?

that's a foul thought. From a useful point of view, there is not any longer adequate detention center area to house each and all of the cheaters. Then how do you define cheating? Emotional? actual? What are the outcomes for people who falsely accuse somebody who's harmless? Is it the cheater that is going to detention center or do the two events pass? If given a call between going after a housebreaking suspect or a cheater, which do you think of a police officer will pick? If something, i may be in desire of necessary pre-marital counseling until eventually now a marriage license is issued. it is an extraordinarily undesirable thought it rather isn't been staggering concept out. that's adequate that we've a president who's forcing his non secular perspectives by way of coverage and legislations. while will adequate be adequate?

Considering cheating is quite common, and involves judges, cops, lawyers, priests, teachers, presidents, etc.... it would be another law hard to enforce. And the rich and famous would pay there way out of it, and the poor Americans would suffer. Marriage has it's own values to every person and couple. Many people are very happily married and are swingers, or they accept each other's affairs.
I believe if married, you should not want to be intimate with anyone else. But that is my value, and we should not condem others for their life choices. We do not have enough jails to lock up all spouses whom have cheated, but they will have to answer to there own conscience in the end.

Government has a right to regulate anything they want, however marriage should be neutral. Those who don't have any convictions or religious problems should be free to marry and divorce. If anything it should be a civil matter and the other spouse should decide if the cheating causes them hardship (like exposing them to STD) and sue for monetary damages. I think it's far better for the injured person to get the rewards.

This is an insane outrage. The legal joining of people in marriage is a CIVIL legal relationship. If the legal marriage "contract" is broken through "cheating," the legal remedy is divorce, not jail.

Only religious morons could come up with such a stupid law, not to mention the severity of the penalty.

Absolutely not. If you cheat, I think you can get punished during divorce proceedings, but not as a criminal offense.

About 70% of the married people I know have cheated.

All people that get married in front of a priest should get punished according their holy book if they admit adultery or seek divorce. No business for the government

No.

The State's only concern in marriages is the contractual stuff about inheritance and property.
