I agree totally. My only concern is whether people, smokers that is, will stay away from social clubs and the like. If so that would affect lots of people with reduced attendances. People like bar staff, entertainers and so on. With reduced revenue these places will not be able to generate enough income to pay these people. I play in a live cabaret band and we obviously charge more than the tape backing singers. If the clubs can't pay us they will book lesser acts and the standard of entertainment will drop. That will mean even fewer people attending. Don't forget also that a large chunk of revenue comes from bingo sales and fruit machines. Eventually many will close thus losing a valuable community service and loss of an entertainment centre.
Although an avid non-smoker I feel that there should at least be a room or area set aside where smokers can go. At least that way the clubs will stay open and jobs won't be lost. Remember that bar staff are often lowly paid and rely on their bar earnings and tips.

In the chicago land area there is a ban on smoking too, but a few of the bars are going to lift the band to increase there business on sunday for the playoff games and do so on Superbowl sunday tooo.. I am not sure on how I feel about this if it is just for $$$$ then it is a wrong reason. I do understand that lots of businesses are loosing customers overthis issue but I think in some way the public is going alittle over board with this whole no smoking thing.. I am a non-smoker I choose to sit in first avaible ..

Im a smoker - I DONT like smoking around people who dont smoke but there are no facilities where you can have a cigarette in the company of other people who are happy to kill themselves too
I think its a great idea to have smoke free public areas, I really do but it defeats the object when you are sat outside blowing smoke over people coming in and out of bars etc or stopping someone else enjoying a summer evening.
Look at the current situation - there are very rarely any cigarette bins- I end up hoping that the *** I have butted out will not set light to the bin or shove it in my handbag and hope the same think doesnt happen to me.
It is my chioce to smoke but I would like to be able to enjoy my habit without endangering someone else and feeling like a leper which sadly this legislation has failed me on both counts.

As a bartender I love the smoking ban. My chest no longer hurts after nine hours of breathing in second hand smoke and my skin looks allot better. Business was down significantly when the ban first came out. But alcoholism isn't going any where and things are now back to normal. Just much healthier on my end.

YES! I'm a non-smoker with allergic based Asthma -- and since the US instituted the Smoking ban in stores, restaurants, public buildings -- after all those years of working very hard for my money ... I could SIT COMFORTABLY in a restaurant and NOT end up in the emergency room because of an Asthmatic episode.
Now if only we could STOP smokers from dumping their ashtrays in the street, from just tossing their used cigarettes on the side of the roads, dumping them in the sand on public beaches, etc. There is nothing more disgusting than being a homeowner, allergic/asthmatic -- and finding someone who smokes has opened their window, and DUMPED their cigarette trash on YOUR Lawn, or you want to go to the beach with your children, and you have to find or compete for those spots of sand that are free of cigarette remains (yuck!)

i'm a smoker and the ban doesn't bother me. in fact i've met new friends in the smoking areas that i wouldn't have spoken to in the pubs. in fact the only downfall of no smoke reek in the pubs is that now i can smell peoples b.o and bad breath which before was disguised in the smoke fumes.

2 small towns near us just went NS (the WHOLE TOWN of Tinley Park and Orland IL USA) Bar owners, waitresses, bartenders, etc are NOT making any money. (just one point)
Another, why are using all the tax money from selling cigs if no one can SMOKE them. (I quit in March, so really don't care, but could debate this all day)
oh, PS, its a FACT that revenue from these business have gone down 6-8%, they're lifting the ban temporarily for 30 days to see how to deal with it.
