Try the restore function or go back function on your computer to go back to a day when your computer was working. My sound on my old computer started going on the fritz and then the motherboard of my computer died and the whole computer had to be pitched..lost all the data that wasn't saved.

You may be able to diagnose it via the Control Panel Troubleshooter.

Go to Start Menu
Settings
Control Panel
Double-click the System icon to display System Properties
Select Hardware Tab
Device Manager button
Expand the Sound, Video and Game controllers list
See whether there are any yellow error marks
If so, double click the device, see what it says about errors and use the Troubleshooter button if necessary. It may be able to tell you what the fault is.

You can also try deleting the device in the Device Manager dialog, then re-starting Windows and its should 'detect new hardware' and re-install the device driver. You can also use the Control Panel 'Add New Hardware' icon to get windows to detect the soundcard. Roll back the Registry to a previous day using system restore if this causes any problems, via Start button, Help and Support, Undo changes to your computer with System Restore (on the right).

After that, test your sound card by playing an audio cd or an MP3/wav file in the windows media player.
