It doesn't really matter how many intelligent people there are. Even if atheists account for at little as 1% of the world, that's 60 million people.
And yet strangely, some people are more concerned about the rights of small, less populous groups, like the jews. If jews were treated the way atheists are treated, we'd call it anti-semitism.
There may not be open violence towards jews any more, but we still call it hatred. Why aren't atheists afforded the same respect?

Between 2.5% and 15%, depending on how you count. It is hard to count atheists because the term has been made pejorative in many places and this reduces the number who want to admit that label, even if they have no beliefs in any gods. There are many atheists who call themselves agnostics only because they think that an atheist must be someone who believes there is no absolute possibility of a god existing, instead of just someone who lacks belief in such. They argue that since anything is possible, they'd rather use the label agnostic. Then there are others who label themselves as free thinkers, secular humanists, and such. Another factor in the counting is that churches often include anybody who has been a member in their ranks, even if that person has left the church. There are even some atheists who attend church just for the social aspect.
That's why the numbers vary so much.
In any case, I agree with the first answerer... There's not enough, yet.

There is no atheist in this world. The Atheists are thinking and remembering God more than theist but in a negative way. The people those who claim themselves as atheist may be about 15% to 20% I hope.

Between 2 and 5% of the world has openly declared themselves to be Atheist.
About 8 - 12% of the world has "declined to state" or otherwise remains neutral or "not otherwise aligned."
As such they are neither Atheists, theist, Diest, panatheist or agnostic. They simply pledge NO allegence, one way or the other.
Many atheists like to "claim" these people, but the sheer fact remains there was a BOX on the form and it said ATHEIST and they did not check it. They checked the box marked DECLINE TO STATE or NONE OF THE ABOVE.
For all we know, they could easily be PAgans, Christians, Atheists or Muslims but chose to say "none of your business.

In reality perhaps 40% of people worldwide have no genuine conviction in the existence of God. Polls count those people who claim to be religious but a large proportion of them do nothing to practice their claimed religion so in effect they're just atheists without the honesty to admit it.

I don't think it can be accurately reported - not everyone admits to being an atheist, just like not everyone admits to other things that other people might not like.

Theism or the belief ithe existence of God as kind and omn ipotent entity is always a crutch for those of us in our weak moments. In reality nobody understands the concept of God except when one is in distress, or when one is unable to explain human situation. Rest are liars.

Last survey in the US showed 28%. Elsewhere I think it is even higher. But in many countries it is deadly to admit you do not belief in gods, most will not speak up in public about their Atheism. You don't have to go to a church to pray so Atheism is not visible to many, but many -even church going- people know better than to belief in imaginary gods.
