Adam and Eve ate fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Before this happened, they didn't even know what evil was. So how could God punish them for something that was bad?

yes bungyow but in their minds there was no right or wrong. So how could they understand that it was wrong to eat the fruit?

Yes I know God told them not to eat that fruit. He also gave them free will... but then he punished them when they exercised that free will.
In essence, they "accidentally" sinned, because they had no idea there was such a thing as sin.
Because they had no right and no wrong, they had the ultimate open minds. So how could God be surprised when they listened to Satan?

lol Karlos... I never said anything about Adam committing the first sin... I love it how you people automatically think I know nothing of the bible.

I asked this question a while back - check out the answers:

My take on the story is that before they ate the fruit, they were naked and not ashamed. After they ate it, they knew they were naked and hid. "Why did you hide?" "Because I was naked." There it is. That makes it pretty obvious that eating the fruit changed something, so God set them up for a fall by putting the tree there, creating Eve, not giving them knowledge, letting the serpent in, and blaming them for everything afterward.
To paraphrase Frank Zappa, "Get smart, get ******" is the message of the Bible.
The Bible was written by people, and those people must have thought that this story was worthy of inclusion in the book because it fits in with the whole "someone screwed up and God got mad" tone of the book, when everything that went wrong in the book is actually God's fault . Most primitive cultures have a "creation story", this one is just a bit more ridiculous than most.

I guess that they knew only one thing as evil, eating the fruit from the tree of life. So, as you pointed out, they did have knowledge of good and evil, although that knowledge was quite limited. According to this legend, Adam and Eve were punished for doing the one thing they knew to be wrong.
We might then ask, what was their knowledge of good and evil after they were sent out of the Garden of Eden? Murder? Rape? Incest? Bribery? I kind of doubt that their knowledge encompassed all of these things.
Were they able to foresee all the evil that would happen in the future? This knowledge must also have been very limited.
I wish I could conclude this better rather than just raise a lot of questions. Your question has got me thinking.

God told them point blank not to eat of that one tree. They disobeyed what God commanded. They knew right then what would happen if they did eat that tree. There was evil then too. Its just that evil hasnt been into the garden yet. God wasnt like todays parents. He doesnt tell them over and over that he will punish them if they dont stop. Once should be enough, and then comes the punishment.

"Tree of Knowledge" represents the brain branching out, it means life decided to choose and thus grows. life not just human being are formed by nature, and by human will or alike-animals. we decided to make choices. trees and plants doesn't choose. they have no knowledge of bad and evil.
this may sound very stupid, and silly, but it is true for my searching.
we are born to sin and repent. its a constant pattern of living things with brain.
Adam and Eve isn't the same species as people nowadays thought about. their now even can be called humans, because from the start they should have no brain as we do today.

first of all, yes, it's true. God warned the first couple and told them not to eat from that tree. God said that precisely. It was clear.
second, Adam did sin for eating that forbidden fruit but he was punished, not for eating the fruit, but because he was UNREPENTANT.
Third, Adam sin wasn't the first sin... (note: please, study more!)

I don't know, why do you punish your kids or allow government to punish criminals. Every criminal says they's not guilty. See, there is no crime. Rape and murder is a paper crime someone created in their minds. Nature inflicts death on people every day from old age, volcanos, tidal waves and Earthquakes. You don't charge a rattle snake with muder and try it in a court for killing you with a bite.

This question has been so "done" before. God told Adam not to eat from the tree. You don't have to know good and evil to know that you shouldn't do something that God told you NOT to do.
When you were little and your mom told you "don't talk to strangers" did you know WHY? Probably not, not till you were older, all you knew was that you shouldn't talk to strangers.
