In different catagories these are the best.
Head Units: Alpine, JVC, and Sony
Amplifiers: US Amps, Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, and Alphasonic.
Mid Speakers: Alpine, Boston Acoustic, and Eclipse
Subwoofers: JL Audio, MTX Jackhammer, Diamond Audio, and Powerbass Extreme.
Hope this helps.

If you have a car toys around you, I'd check them out. I got a $1700 system installed in my car in 05 (and that's not a lot of money in a system), and then i had some problems with the satellite radio portion. They were very good about immediately helping me with the problem. I actually burned through 3 satellite radio receivers, and they never stopped being helpful and trying to find the problem (we eventually traced it to the antenna, which was shorting the receiver). I have been to them several times since, including for my fiance's speakers. Their installation is solid, prices are competitive, and they're service and support, at least in my case, was as good as I could ask for.

I have always relied on JL audio they hit hard and can take some abuse like no other. I have also used Kicker, MTX, Rockford Fosgate, JBL, Infinity, Polk Audio, and Pioneer. I like using things that match so everytime I switched I also switched my amp as well. The JLs always sounded better to me so I always go back to them. 2nd on the list is MTX

All depends on your budget and tastes.
You want a good head unit : Alpine
You want a good amplifier : Butler Tube Drivers (http://www.butleraudio.com/car.php)
Speakers : Component Waveguide Sets (http://usdaudio.com/)
Subs : (?) but make it a free-air installation if you want accuracy.
I've got MB Quart's in the rear myself. Bright but not half bad. keep them.

Talking about speakers? I like the Memphis Bells or something like that. They sound great.
