If you want reliability then you have to choose a Japanese car. they cost slightly more to buy in the first place as they are sought-after, but that will be offset by the cost-savings in not having to repair the poxy thing every 5 minutes. Obviously wear-and-tear items like brake pads and exhausts and servicing are going to be similar for all types of car.
The Fiesta with the 1100 or 1300 engine is good, but watch-out for rust on anything upto about '96. They do rot well. The Fiesta with the 1.25 engine is good in the main, but still a bit prone to head-gaskets and big-end bolts snapping on thrashed engines.
The Saxo has proved to be a useful little car, and doesn't seem to have inherited the quirky nonsense that most Citroens are prone to.
I still gotta say buy Japanese. They really have got reliability down to a fine art and a Toyota of some description will keep you happy. A nice Toyota Starlet, hard to find, people buy and keep them, but a damned fine car all the same.

First Car? Most Teens I see have a rubbish old Peugeot 206, or a Skoda Felicia, or something like that. Be different, buy a decent Vauxhall or a Ford.

My first car was VW golf- very easy to drive and it's now 5years old.. Went only yesterday to trade it in for a new Toyota Corolla which is also very easy to drive but slightly bigger and the finish inside is nicer. Depending on your budget, you cant really go wrong with a Ford Fiesta ora Vauxhall Corsa (BSM use Corsas and they often sell them with very few miles on the clock at a good price) Good luck with your test!

A cheap and cheerful VW or Toyota, they are both very reliable which is what you need when you first start driving, dont want to be breaking down every other day. If you happen to be in little accident. (hope not), they are able to take a little knock. Best to stay clear of Ford, they would crush and cave in around you. Good luck.

DO NOT GET AN SUV. They are NOT safer in any way shape or form. Get like a VW Jetta or something small that can take a beating. Corolla or Civic is pretty good. And VW Beetle.

I'd go for fiesta, corsa or escort, astra. Jap cars are brilliant but expensive if something goes wrong. Also high on insurance for young drivers.
There are plenty of these out there at the cheap end (under £1k) so you should get plenty of choice.

any kind of Honda or Toyota are great cars for starters, ,good on gas, not the most in comfort ( the low end ones )
I also love the mid 80's year BMW 528 series, big and heavy and good gas mileage on the highway, comfortable, but can cost alot to pay someone to fix
