There is an old truth that still applies today:

Men are with the finest girl they can afford.

Women are with the richest man they can attract.

Women (in the long run)are generally more interested in security and ability to provide the good life than they are concerned with looks. Ugly men can attract models for girlfriends and wives as long as they have enough money.

Men are much more focused on looks and will trade up when they can afford to. They will blame their wives for "letting themselves go" and seek out a younger, prettier trophy wife even tho the man has also "let himself go", as long as he has the bucks he will find arm-candy to help him spend it.
