A democratic assembly woman Sally Lieber's new proposal would make, hitting and slapping a child under 4 years old a misdemeanor. Adults could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

I don't think parents in any state or in an country should be jailed for spanking their children, within reason.

Children today get away with so much. Many have absolutely no respect for anyone or anything let alone for themselves.

If a child can't be slapped (not bashed or hit to within an inch of their lives) by way of punishment for doing something wrong, then what is our role as a parent?

I feel that is so unherd of!!! There is a place and time for a spanking!! If you don't let your children know the right and wrong in life at a young age then when they get older they have no respect for anyone or anything. I have seen the show Super Nanny and if they would have gotten a little pop on the butt early when the problem started They wouldn't have been so OUT OF CONTROL! There is abuse by spanking too much but a pop here and there isn't going to hurt a thing. Now some of those parents just can't stop with one little pop and maybe that is the problem in this sitaution. But can you imagine the fines and just how full there system is going to be? Wow Interesting!!

This liberal says that spanking is NOT abuse and is an acceptable form of punishment. I have absolutely no problem when I am in a store, I see a child act up and the parent giving a spank on the backside to get them to behave. I do, however, have a serious problem when I see a child act up, screaming for that toy and the mom says OK sweetie. Here you go. And then the kid continues to cry some more for another toy. Those parent's should go to jail.

As a social worker I can tell you that parents get away with assaulting their children all the time. I don't mean the occassional smack on the butt or slap on the hand, I mean assault.

They get counseling, they lose their kids for a bit (so the state pays for their care for them and they get a break), they get assistance with housing and jobs......but punished NO!

If you and I were arguing, and you wouldn't do as I said, and I hauled off and smacked you or hit you, it would be assault. It would be an equal fight, we're both fully grown.

Why should it be different if I slapped a person (children are people) who I out weighed by 100 pounds just because I gave birth to or adopted them?

Just because a law is on the books, doesn't mean it will be fully used. It is against the law to have oral sex in many states (WITH YOUR SPOUSE!)

First time misdemeanor offenders seldom get jail time (I worked in probation for 3 years)....and yeah, you should get a fine for smacking your kid around.

Each state has regulations between spanking and abuse.

I was NEVER hit by my parents and grew up fine. Went to church, went to college, NEVER got in trouble. My husband was spanked ALL the time and dropped out, got arrested, rebelled against everything.

HITTING is not the only way to discipline a child...it is simply the easiest and the one that requires the least amount of intelligence.

I don't think the law should get involved parents need some leeway in raising their children and should not be threatened with criminal charges unless discipline crosses the line to abuse.
when parents are loving and firm, and communicate well with a child, "the child is exceptionally competent and well-adjusted, whether or not their parents spanked them as preschoolers.

Californians just don't want to live by the same rules that everybody else does. Their is a difference between spanking & beating. Go to jail for spanking ludicris and to think we go to Brazil for Nuts. We have more than we need in California.

This question has already been posted a dozen times.

Funny how this question brings out the most ignorant of the bunch. I love seeing how people's prejudices against those who happen to live in California reflect just how small minded they are. We also have smoking bans in all restaurants and bars as well so before you go whining about how liberal Californians are please try to take a broader perspective.
