He knows that the door handle is the mechinizam that you need to work so that the door can be pushed open. It only opens one way and he seems to know that also and when on the other side he doesn't try to open it because he knows when he jumps up to the handle his slightly forward force does nothing. Is it pretty common or should I call ripleys?

my husband and I can hardly have any privacy,one of our 6 cats (Crystal-she thinks she's my mom-) always manages to open the bedroom door. I had heard of a cat that likes to open the bathroom door when people are inside...he belongs to a friend.

No, my 2 cats can go through either way. they hang off the handles and to open depending on what side, they either push or put their little paws underneath to pull door open

This is quite commen in cats. Many cats can open doors if they tried but the way your cat does this is very clever!
