The official status of the bottlenose dolphin is Vulnerable - this is third in the list after critically endgangered and endangered.

There are more complex issues than just overall numbers - while some populations are doing quite well, others are not. The species is not one just mixing pot - different populations are reproductively separate from one another and in losing a whole population a whole raft of genetic variants could disappear with them.

Also, like other species bottlenose dolphins have different 'cultural' adaptations - some beach themselves to hunt, other populations specialize on different prey. These will be lost if populations disappear.

This species definitely is of conservation concern - the degree depends on where in the world you look.

They are not endangered today, but they will be in the near future. There are other types of dolphin that are defiantly endangered.
