There's a different postcode for every town and city.

They are letters and numbers. As an example, this is the Postcode for Buckingham Palace: SW1A 1AA The first letters show the postal area (In London, this is South West - SW) - 1A is the district and 1AA shows the location. Then combined with the building number, the post office can pinpoint the exact building the post needs to go to. London post codes are separated into directions (such as N, NW, S, SW etc) Outside of London, the first letters will be centred around a local large city or town. Longleat Safari Park: BA12 7NW BA = Bath Tisbury Railway Station: SP3 6JT SP = Salisbury An average of 15 houses share the same postcode which is why you need the house number or name of building for it to reach the final destination.

Every street and road in the UK has it's own postcode so you would need to know the full address before you could get the postcode.....

Try looking here...though the site is undergoing some improvements and may not be working fully at the moment...

exeter = EX (usually they take the first two, or the first and a middle letter of the city in question)

so i suspect plymouth would be PL (but i'm not sure)
