During the depression in the '30's, alcohol was banned and many people made millions by being 'Rum Runners'. Bootlegging alcohol from Canada in many cases to bars and clubs all over the United States. Many did this by paying a piano company in Canada to build the frames and boxes of the piano up there, fill them with crates of alcohol and ship them to the US to be completed there. The bootleggers would simply pay the wiring and tuning folks to hide the crates for them until they could be picked up and complete pianos for their bars and clubs on top of it. Despite the economy being at a record low, many people made themselves rich enough to run for political office after fighting a war and coming home to a stable market. The American Dream at work.
