Canada the peace loving, multicultural country has a long tradition of providing safe haven to refugees from all over the world-fleeing violence and starvation. Canada's large population of immigrants are once refugees, who left their home lands to save their lives and came to Canada in search of better life for them and for their loved ones. Now the Iraqis displaced and effected by the turmoil back home, are expected to flee their homeland and arrive at the Western countries as refugees. If U.S.A toppeled sadam's regiment and invaded Iraq with the promise of better future for Iraqis, why U.S.A exporting those Iraqis to Canada and to the other Western countries as refugees? U.S.A invaded Iraq, destroyed it and now expecting the Iraqis to seek asaylum in Canada. Do you believe that Canada is capable of having a large amount of refugees from other parts of the world and helping them with the current economy of this country?

The fact is, the US doesn't have the social system in place to cope with immigrants and refugees that Canada does... however, this places the average Canadian in a position of having to fund way more refugees and immigrants than he/she can afford. I believe that the US should take the Iraqi refugees on as a bi-part of the war they are involved in. I know they are involved in other (on-site) humanitarian efforts.

On the flip side, why are these people leaving? They should stay and fight for their country, for its freedom and democracy. Too many people leave when things get tough and then they get here and too often criticize or want to change it. Of course, I speak in ignorance - I don't live with car bombs exploding in my city on a regular basis. That must be intensely stressful and I don't want to downplay the horror they are going through. Still, I don't think leaving is the answer. If Canada or the US was taken over by senseless violence, I'd like to think that good people would stay and work to overthrow that system.

Just a thought, for what it's worth.

Despite being a bleeding heart liberal who has worked with refugees in the past, I believe that Canada is at -- if not passed -- its ability to absorb large numbers of refugees. Already, Canada accepts -- a per capita basis -- about five times as many refugees as does the United States or Britain. Put bluntly, we cannot absorb many more without massive social problems that will sour the political atmosphere for further arrivals of refugees in the future.

Well if it was me I'd be looking at their backgrounds and criteria for admission with a fine tooth comb BEFORE I allowed them in. However Canada being relatively small in population despite the size of Canada , probably will let them in anyway.

Frankly I think the US should take em, they started the problem, let them take on the refugees, because you know as well as I do , when Canada DOES take them in, then the US will be screaming about the terrorists coming across our border AGAIN.

And way to go Patrick Lehay for taking the Bush administration to task in the Arar case!

I can't agree with you more... I get sick of seeing how many Canadians don't have Jobs because we have so many Immigrants that come over here and work for less so they get all the jobs and the ones that don't work get a free ride on welfare... I think if you come to Canada to live you should have some kind of trade that you can pervade a serves and not collect off the government... It the US wants to bring them over here then they should take them...

I enjoy your Country very much and it's just as disheartening to hear about the insane policies of our Gov't as it to hear about the strife of corruption you experience over there. Trying to give you an explanation from my end is almost impossible considering our Resident-In-Chief and the policies of his Administration as the majority of the U.S. is baffled by the mans blantant illegal activities and incompetent nature. I hope your Country isn't gonna end up being the dumping ground for America's greatest mishap's endeavors.
