Accepting Christ as your savior and Lord will set you free of your well deserved punishment from the Father.
As Christians we do not use the word "atone" anymore. The Jews did ritual animal sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people, but Jesus, the Lamb of the World, is our sacrifice. He didn't just atone for our sins, He paid for them.

To a certain extent, here on earth, many different good things can "atone" for your faults and misdeeds.
From God's point of view, this isn't the way you get beyond this life and into the next one. You really have to take into yourself God's spirit, which is what becomes your immortal soul. To do that, you have to pursue "atonement" the way God dictated, not the way the world dictates, and he chose Jesus as the gatekeeper.
Sorry. His world, his rules.

Yeah - but not your faithfulness and love.
God is the only active party in salvation. We just accept what he's done - it's really so much better than we could imagine.
Through his spirit we become increasingly Christlike - who is the kindest person I've ever met - Have you read Galatians lately?
Grace,
PS as Christians we definitely DO use the word attone - take it from someone doing a postgrad in theology at Oxford University who has just done a paper on the Evangelical understanding of Christ's substitutionary attonement

No. You have to say 34 Hail Marys, stand on your head and recite the National Anthem backwards, tithe $22.37 to a church of your choice, tithe $17.12 to a church of my choice, up up down down left right left right B A start, spin around twice, and wear a knit cap for three weeks.
God doesn't love you. God can only be appeased by silly rituals. Haven't you read the Bible? Haven't you read the correct version of the Bible? Haven't you read the third printing of the sixth edition of the forty-first translation of the correct version of the Bible? If you haven't, you can't truly call yourself a Christian.

Yes! But it is the faithfulness and love of Jesus Christ that atones for the sins of those who by faith believe in Him not our own insufficient faithfullness and love. When we have been given the gift of faith, we know in our heart of hearts that Jesus loves us, died for us, and our sins are forgiven.

The Greatest Love is not the love of self, and what we can do
for ourselves, but for others. The Christian Bible says that to turn "one" person from his self-destructive path, forgives a
multitude of sins.

Only if you are faithful to God, the Almighty Creator and Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
And you love your neighbors as you do yourself.
