It's risky breeding Chihuahuas at any age. Having a first litter at 6 would put her life in danger. Have her spayed & you won't have any more problems

If you've read all of the above answers and are still interested in breeding her then do a LOT of reading up on the subject.. the reason chihuahuas have a reputation of risky whelping is because they are bred to have small bodies and big heads... (obviously makes whelping very difficult).. so make sure you have a hefty bank account or empty credit card ready incase of emergency vet bills.

Get her checked out by the vet if you do plan on it and make sure that any stud dog is checked out too.. (as you have bred dogs before you should know this stuff anyway so I wont keep on).

Obvious stuff to consider...

1. if you need to ask on here then do you really think it is a good idea? (you must have known you'd get a bad response from a lot of people).

2.you've only given one bit of info about her... why does treating her like a child affect the reasons for breeding her? does she have a poor temperament around strangers? are their any traits in her that you would not want to see in her offspring?

3. Luxating Patella (poor knee joints) is very common in chis... as she is older is she showing any signs of this... e.g occasional limping or pain when walking? If so then you do not want to continue breeding this into future generations.

4. How big is she? My mother-in-law used to breed one of the chis that I own now, but this chihuahua is a large girl and so the health risks were slightly slimmer than that of smaller girls. (My MIL was also a top breeder in the country so knew what she was doing).

5. Who do you plan to sell the pups to? are you going to vet the buyers? no point in even thinking about it if you are just going to put a sign up and sell them to anyone who turns up on the doorstep.

6. Who is the stud dog going to be? what are you planning on paying the owners of this dog? what is the dog's temperament? what can he do to improve the breed?

7. Is she KC registered or does she at least have a pedigree?

8. here are the code of ethics for the British Chihuahua club... if you comply to all of these and are still happy to go ahead then good luck to you... because chihuahua puppies are the best :)

CODE OF ETHICS
Membership of the Club shall imply acceptance of the Club's Code of Ethics:

Members shall not mate any ***** that is less than 12 calendar months of age.

Members shall not mate a ***** aged more than 8 years of age.

Members shall not mate a ***** after it has had 6 litters.

Members shall not sell, or allow to leave their premises, puppies which are less than 12 weeks of age.

Members shall not have more than two cæsarian sections on any one ***** and these must not be on two consecutive seasons.

Members shall not mate any ***** for more than two consecutive seasons.

Members shall always give dietary advice when selling a Chihuahua.

Dogs should always be sold to final owners, never knowingly to dealers or agents.

Follow-up advice should always be given to new owners.

No member shall knowingly abandon any dog, ***** or puppy.

p.s. I know it shouldn't make a difference, as there are lots of reasons people don't spell properly, but it does put me off the idea when you don't spell the breed's name properly..

Personally at 40 I was over having children. I would make sure you have 1000.00 up saved for that emergency c-section. Have your dogs labs done and a cardiac check too.
Make the choice yourself.
I WOULDN'T DO IT.

At her age, no it would not be safe to breed her. Chihuahua's are prone to problems during pregnancy and whelping even under the best of circumstances at this age the risk would be greatly increased.

As for spaying...the health benefits of spaying have now pretty much passed..your girl is now at an even greater risk of mamamry cancer, reproductive cancers and pyometria (a very, very serious uterine infection that is often fatal) then she was when she was younger. Also dogs do NOT come in heat after they are spayed.

since you are already an experienced breeder you should know that letting a 6 year olf dog have a first litter is not a good idea. Add to that the problems chihuahua (not how you spelled it) have when whelping and it's a bad idea ll around. Why would you want to breed her? What has she got which will improve the breed? Are you prepared for losing her to a ceasarian?
Mind you, I wonder at the mindset of anyone who breeds staffies in any case since they are one of the most common dogs to end up in rescue. Rescue kennels are full of unwanted staffies.

no don't do it!!!!! all the animals in this world and you want to bring some more pups in this world and how do you know it's family back ground. the flaws that may have been in her family may not have showed up on her or her parents but they may show up on her litter. leave the breeding to the professionals.if you spay her she won't have a season. are you sure you know what you are talking about. dogs don't have season when they are fixed. dah! and you said you have bred dogs before. that in it self was wrong if you do no not know all there is about dogs.

Do you know how much a c-section costs ? anywhere from 1200-2000.us dollars . And if your chi is very small and the pups are too big she could end up dying if not given a c-section or you could still end up losing her .

absolutely not... she is now getting too old,,, have you shown her and had her evaluated by a chuhuahua breed juge? that should be done before any breeding is ever considered.. having her spayed would prolong her life and be beneficial to her health.. good luck

6 is too old to be breeding her from everything that I have read. I wouldn't chance it.
