That sounds more like paranoia. Sociopaths couldn't care less what people think of them. Sociopaths do and say things without regard to people's feelings or well being. You'll find many sociopaths in business, politics, and -- although to a somewhat lesser degree -- academia.

No, what you are describing is someone with a personality disorder, of which there are several.
Sociopaths are usually quite charming, even charismatic, and use it to take advantage of and manipulate others.
