Although it is difficult to know how many people reside in the UK illegally, a Home Office study released in March 2005 estimated a population of between 310,000 and 570,000 way to many!

Too many that's for sure, and I doubt that the true figure will ever be known...a lot of illegal immigrants have been smuggled into the country in lorries and such like, so in reality it is impossible to know how many are here.

I think that the estimate given by the first answerer includes around 100,000 refused asylum-seekers who report each month at immigration, but who the Home Office cannot send back.

310,000 = half of one percent of the total population.

If they are illegal then they are not registered so there is no way of knowing. The estimates range from tens of thousands to over half a million.

well by definition nobody will know because theyre illegal, so theyre not gonna be registered. but i would guess about 3 million immigrants.
