Americans are the reason why democracy has flourished throughout the world. We are of every race and denomination. We seek to make the world safe. We are the reason why Japan, Germany, and Italy lost the war... yes others did thier part but who finished the Japanese and also came just in time before the fall of England. We are the first to arrive in a natural disaster. We fight the wars while others scoff. Then when we sit back and do nothing... others scoff. Its always the US's fault. Well get it together people... if not for the US... you wouldn't have freedom.

As I said... others did thier part. However the US won the war with Japan... you are mistaken. And yes the US in not the only country who lost lives... many did. However, the point is without the US... you all would be living in a world without freedom. And france did not give us thier form of government... in fact you didnt even become a democracy until after. And Britain... also a great nation... did do alot... I never denied Australia or Britain they're greatness... I asked why others deny the US.

It is the arrogance of some Americans who constantly force our so-called greatness down other countries throats. We surely could take a lesson from our forefathers who were humble, giving, ethical and highly respected for themselves as well as their office of government. They lived with the premise that the office and title is to be respected.
When you are humble and you let others exalt you, then you may be called great. But to call yourself great is arrogance. You are only "great" when other nations other than yourself call you "great."
Some Americans have no respect for their biological fathers, much less their fathers of government. When we get back to honoring our mothers and fathers, then we may be able to hear other countries call us "great." When we don't respect ourselves, how can we expect other countries to respect us. Hollywood and television and the Internet portray an America due no respect. Guard your tongue and your eyes and just maybe you can enjoy greatness.
That privilege of being called "great" is earned and we Americans are not earning it.

1) Britain and France are the reason democracy has flourished throughout the world. We were the ones who conquered half the globe and brought our system of government to the people who lived there.
2) America is not the only multi-cultural society, again Britain, France and also many other western European countries are multi-cultural.
3) You seek to make the world safe by making it easier to trade in nuclear material (with India) starting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and TOTALLY destabalising the region, goading Israel into bombing Iran - how is starting wars making people safer?
4) The US only just came in time before the fall of BRITAIN, and only then because the election had safely been won, and Roosevelt could act according to his conscience rather than in order to secure his job.
5) You are not necesarily the first to arrive at a natural disaster. You do not control the only aid agencies. You don't contribute everything towards aid - even third world countries contributed vastly towards helping the victims of hurricain katrina, wheras your government did surprisingly little.
6) Others scoff at your wars because your wars are unnecesary, based on lies, a waste of money and achieve nothing but destruction.
7) When you sit back and do nothing you sit back and do nothing to save money or votes. Other people don't like seeing the richest nation not contributing their part. Again, third world countries give a lot of money in aid when disasters happen - and far higher percentages of their wealth than the US gives.
8) The US abolished slavery a long time after other 'civilised' countries. The US was segragated until 50 years ago. How is this freedom? Now the US is segragated on monetary grounds, but apparently this is fair. You are just about the only nation on earth without any form of socialism in government - and don't say "well that's why we're the best" because it's simply not true, it leads to incredible unfairness and hardship for the poor.
Essentially the US is hated because of hypocracy. Certainly you do good things, but equally you do many bad things. The dominant nation of the time will always be envied and criticised, but these criticisms are not always unfounded. The US may be the most powerful nation, and has achieved many great things, but with power comes responsibility - something many Americans are lacking in.
*Edit* And yes France DID bring democracy to the world, they were the first modern democracy! The US was going to be a monarchy after the revolution, as this was at tried and tested method of government, until they saw that democracy seemed to be working in France. Without the French revolution we might still be living in states with absolute monarchs.

I guess after getting attacked, the US had no choice but to join in. But then again not being in the war for the first few years and being in denial.....long after the rest of us were there, oh yippee the yanks show up and yes they should be fresh and ready to fight, they came in at the last minute. Basically we did the hard work and you took the credit.
America is so self serving, no wonder the rest of the world hates the country. People have grown tired of the smug sanctimonious our s h it doesn't stink attitude that you give off like a bad smell. I come from a real democracy...no patriot act no bs.
Looks like the consensus is that no one posting on this question really likes or admires America. Half the problem is people like you who ask loaded questions. Anytime a question is asked about America being the best or the greatest you are opening a whole can of worms. Here is a new word for your vocabulary....humble. It has gotten many nations by who don't have the political strife going on even at home. The difference being is you have to keep reminding yourself how "GREAT" you are as a nation. The rest of us KNOW we are great and are secure enough we don't have to hear it every five minutes to believe it.

I think u need to read the Question posted by the President of India. He has tried to find an answer to all this senseless violence by being innovative and asking the people of the world to voice their opinions. Mr Bush reacted to violence with violence. I can not say what could have happen had he not retaliated. But neither can we say what might have happened had he acted in a different non violent way. The arrogance that you have displayed in your question is the exact reason people are down on America. We are all human. I don't think any one country should be stated as NO 1. What exactly is all this violence teaching are children. These are the people who are the future. When my child is hit by another child I do not tell her to go hit that child back. But the leaders of are countries seem to think it is ok for them to in essence do exactly that!!!!. As I said before I don't know what Should have or could have been done other than what has been done. But there has to be a better way than all this senseless killing and violence

No fair minded, rational individual can deny America's greatness. Having said that I must add that there are reasons, good reasons that we are unpopular around the world. Frequently our actions have been self serving and they appear to be imperialistic and expansionist. Do read about the Spanish-American war and the net results from it as well as the Platt Amendment. Then we had the United Fruit Company exploiting the natural resources of countries in South America. Now we have Exxon-Mobil, Texaco etc leaving behind them the great amount of 15%. Generous aren't they.
If you see behind the rhetoric and the high school's History books, we are not angels all the time.

People have a twisted way of favoring the underdog. Some of the hate in the world today against the USA is generated right here at home from the very biased news agencies of America. If America cannot or will not promote America, then why should the rest of the world. It starts at home. As you can see in some of these responses, it is better to hate Bush then to support America. That is our current spin in politics today in America. I believe that a vast majority in the world still supports the USA as the number one proponent for Freedom in the World.

Maybe your question should be why other countries deny that America is great *now* ?
Maybe you should be aware of the foreign policies of your country and of its corporations, which represent you in these other countries. They constitute the problem. When Mosento goes to India and tries to patent turmeric on the backs of dirth-poor farmers, people see america doing that. Same thing when they see women and children dying in Iraq for 'democracy', or doing nothing while Israel bombs Lebanon, a (rare) free arab country.
There are other democracies in the world, beside yours. India, for one, is a democratic multicultural country that has earned its freedom bravely fighting for it (and that against the british), like you did. While I agree that the dislike in europe is somewhat economy, jealousy-related, the rest of the world does have real grievance against you, in many areas, economic, military or environmental. America, and americans will be great again when they will be aware and care for it.

take a look at your death by gun statistics compaired to the rest of the world. And how long did it take to react to hurricane katrina? That is in your own country. doesnt sound very responsable to me. Maybe fix things there before meddeling with the rest of the world
To my understanding it was the american government that was responsable for 9/11. The "terrorists" accused of this, the ones that hijacked the planes, atleast 9 of them were alive and accounted for. And I would really like to see a picture of a plane hitting the pentagon. The small hole created was in no way made by an airplane.
You know the ony 3 times in history that a high rise building collapsed because of a fire was the twin towers and world trade centre 7 all on 9/11. They only burned for about an hour. there were buildings that burned for around 24 hours that remained standing.
It was also the first 2 times in history an entire airplane was "disintegrated" by the few seconds of jet feul that burned...but the bodies were found....hmmm..it can disitegrate a plane but not a human body. very strange.
honestly, other than the gun thing it has nothing to do with america as a whole. just bush and his deciples..apparently he heard god's voice telling him to do all this stupid crap like go to afganistan

You're right, but we peaked after WWII. The rest of the world remembers Vietnam. Iraq will soon join them. Why fight unwinnable wars? Even Bush Sr thought occupying Iraq was a mistake.
