I understand that this is true also, and the behavior you are describing just about points to the "classic" case. You can probably find more regarding this matter in the Magazine: Cat Fancy, or go to their website and do a search under "ask the vet" at www.catfancy.com. Sorry I couldn't present you with better news.
Best of luck in finding a new companion.

Blood in the stool can be many different things, & as far as the way he was acting - I've never heard of them cats acting like THAT before they die (and I work with cats every day - Animal shelter).
One clear sign of a cat being sick is not eating, AT ALL. This causing the cat to become skin and bones. As long as your cat is eating, I wouldn't worry too much about the cat being so ill.
Contact the closest Animal Shelter, or Humane Society & report your cat is missing. Post flyers with your cat's picture on it and offer a reward. DO NOT post how much you're willing to pay. Just write REWARD in capitals and bold lettering. It's gets people more motivated if their is money involved.

I am guessing he probably did run off to die. My question to you is why did you not get him to the vet? Sounds like he was acting odd for a while.

Sounds like he was sick, change his behavior was the first clue.
If he does come back get him to the vet.
