Basically nothing until the surface of the Sun enters its next cooling period. However if it cannot be stopped or prevented it may be possible to slow the rate down and mitigate some of the effects of solar heating. This will need some cool thinking. The greatest greenhouse gas is in fact water vapour, followed by Methane. Methane is 21 times more effective as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide - which later can be removed from the atmosphere by vegetation and plankton. Major sources of methane are ruminating animals and open paddy fields in South-east Asia and open swamp lands. Reducing our use of meat from ruminating animals might reduce the numbers farmed; encouraging a move from camels to motor vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa, could help. Draining paddy fields and swamps would certainly help, as would making oil extractors capture and use gas from oil wells instead of flaring it off. Planting more trees to extract carbon has to be done with care as some trees trap heat which adds to the problem - but other forms of vegetation do not have that disadvantage. Therefore there could be a double benefit in cultivating plants for use in bio-fuels. Certain forms of plankton that are good at removing carbon can have their growth stimulated by adding nutrients to the sea. But whatever man does, the earth is in a period of warming that is a natural part of its heat cycle - and this is dependent on the condition of the sun. There is nothing that we can do to prevent that, so we should be concentrating more attention on working out how we are going to adapt and cope.

You won't hear this much and I may get some thumbs down but the facts are as follows. The temperature of the earth has increased less than 7/10 of 1 degree (C) from 1880 to 2005. That is an increase of about 1 degree (F) in 125 years. You may choose to believe that is global warming or you may not. Source: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2005/2005cal_fig1.gif There are numerous charts all over the internet showing the same. Some say that 1 degree is enough to impact the global climate, others say it's not. Most proponents of global warming think the earth's temperature has risen much more than that and don't even know that it has only risen by 1 degree. But the charts do not lie as do the proponents on both sides of this issue. The average temperature in the Antarctica is 109 degrees below zero. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctica#Climate It seems to me 108 below (one degree warmer) is still pretty cold and not enough to melt anything. But there are those that say it will.
Back in the '70s all the hype was about global COOLING and another ice age was coming. I remember that they blamed pollution for that too. They said that all the pollution was darkening the skies and not as much sun was coming through so the earth was cooling off. It took many years to discover that they were mistaken and it was all just hype. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling So when someone says, "the sky is falling" don't believe everything you hear on either side of the issue. There are Spin Doctors galore out there.
Most of the time people will form an opinion and not really be informed about the subject with which they become so opinionated about. So it's best that you not form your opinions from other's opinions, (as in this forum) but on the facts presented. (Many do not provide any proof or links to prove their point, just their opinion.) With that said we do have a responsibility to do our part by doing whatever is within your power to keep our planet alive and well.
I hope that helps...

Probably not much. The fact is, the current global temperatures are still below the maximum temperatures infered from ice core data by about 3 degrees C. So it is reasonable to assume that the temperature will go up by at least this much no matter what we do.
With regard to man made green house gases, I believe the most exhaustive study found that we would need to reduce the total emission of man made CO2 by about 50% to have a measurable effect.

The real question is, "Is it worth bothering about?" Global warming is largely a myth, and whatever human contribution to global warming there might be pales in comparison to nature's contribution. One large volcanic eruption would wipe out years of environmental restraint on our part.

If I could afford it, I would build a solar panelled roof on my house, erect a windmill in my yard, and buy a electric hybrid car....cost ~$100,000+. Then I would generate enough clean electricity to run my house, and maybe give some back into the grid. I would drive without polluting the air with combustible gas emissions, like carbon dioxide and other toxic gases. But that is out of my budget range.
Another solution is, to live without having to drive a gasoline burning vehicle, and without electricity in my house. That would result in me losing my job for not showing up and then my house for not being able to pay the mortgage ... I would never ever generate carbon dioxide gas again...only when I farted.

First we'd have to get everybody to learn how to be intelligent. I'd suggest starting with schools. They teach useless knowledge. Knowledge isn't as useful as intelligence. After that everybody would be smart enough to fix global warming and hell, the world. But yeah, like that will ever happen.

You as an individual can do plenty. Switch of lghts if not in use. Use stairs instead of elevators for atleast 2 floors. Do more walking than driving. Use bycycle instead of car. Be environmentally friendly and encourage others to do the same.

Where is the increase in CO2. if it had increased as much as u are claiming people would be dieing. CO2 will smother u to death. Look at photosynthesis on the net. to understand how much the plants have done a good job.

GLOBAL WARMING IS CAUSED DUE TO THE USE OF HARMFUL GASES.....CHLORINE IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT FACTOR..SO USAGE OF CHLORINE AT ANY COST MUST BE AVOIDED....AEROSOLS SHOULD BE AVOID ....THEY LEAD TO AIR POLLUTION...THE MAINTENANCE OF REFRIGERATORS AND AC IS MORE IMPORTANT AS THEY LEAD TO THE LEAKAGE OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS.....THE USAGE OF SULFUR FREE FUELS SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED.....
RECYCLED PAPER CAN BE USED....USE OF COLD WATER INSTEAD OF HOT WATER WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY NEEDED...COMPOSTING WILL HELP TO DISPOSE THE BIO DEGRADABLE WASTES IN OUR HOUSE...
SO ALL THESE MEASURES CAN BE TAKEN UP....PEOPLE SHOULD BE EDUCATED ABOUT THIS....
