You might want to check out any "sponsor a child" charity at the Better Business Bureau's charity Web site:

That is a good way to see if charities have had any recent complaints... and to see how a charity is using its money.

Some charities which I know of that allow you to sponsor a child are: World Vision (which is my favorite), Compassion International, and Christian Children's Fund. (There is also Feed the Children, though I am unsure whether they allow you to sponsor an individual child.)

By the way, all of the above charities have received the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance National Charity Seal. You can read more about that seal at the Web site:
http://www.give.org/seal/index.asp

I have been sponsoring a child through World Vision for the past 4+ years. I have had good experiences with them. My sponsored child and I exchange letters, and hope to get to meet in person someday! She has confirmed that she receives good help from the money I have spent on her sponsorship. I enjoy the chance to communicate with her directly through letters, and through periodic gifts which World Vision makes and allows me to sign as if they are from "me." I have also been allowed to send my little girl small gifts of my own, such as hair elastics, colored pencils, small notepads, stickers, etc. Here is World Vision's Web site:

Thank you for wanting to help children like this.

Sign up to volunteer in a homeless shelter or a women's shelter. The children of homeless families and/or battered women often are the ones that need help the most.

You can also become a regular contributor/donor to UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Funds that helps the children worldwide.

It isn't as personal or maybe satisfying to you as sponsoring a single child but your work will benefit many and be appreciated by the same.

My 14-year old granddaughter sponsors a child from her money earned as a dishwasher, one day per week: her Saturday.

Her mom chose World Vision

I said none because I feel some in there for the money
Go to a poor community and see for yourself
And help out there
