NATO does seem like something long past being worthwhile.. if it ever was for the US in the first place.

NATO has served it's purpose and is becoming an obsolete organization in the old sense. We no longer need a nuclear deterrant against the Soviets to rebuild Europe.
NATOs purpose today is really more of a group of allies with common purpose. UK doesn't really "need" NATO as much as NATO needs the UK and any other friend in the area.

NATO was originally began and formed as an alliance of Western European nations, USA and Canada to offset the threat of Soviet (USSR) expansion in Europe. That original primary purpose has disappeared in recent years with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the low level of risk of attack by Russia. Former USSR allies are joining NATO and it is likely that someday even Russia will be a member.Today, NATO is more like a police force in battle gear keeping the peace in Europe and trying to in Afghanistan.
UK needs NATO because it is better to go to war and into battles with allies than to fight alone.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation NATO was formed incase another world war were to break out.
It has nothing to do with defending the UK it is an agreement that all countrys who are members will work together in preventing anything on the scale of WWII happening ever again.
All member countrys work together in unstable regions of the world alongside the UN.

UK is not a major military or economic force now.Sorry and due aplogy to Brits.UK has no importance in modern world politics.Now there is only one Super Power ie,USA.UK has to depend on USA for everything.UK needs NATO or USA always for its survival.In the eye of the world now UK is only another state of USA(ie,part of USA )

Don't worry pretty soon it will be the Germans and the French deciding where British troops will fight (and Die) . The EU will make all those decisions for you as British Sovereignty is dissolved. Too bad, A great and proud nation lost to the stroke of a pen.... this time the Germans never fired a shot.

I don't really consider NATO a defensive force.... more of a joint force of nations who want to work together for the force of "good" and "right", and who are willing to take actions in a world where there are still forces of darkness. Kosovo for one.
