Well, a photo is a photograph, at least to me. This means it has to be an image captured by a camera-type device.
A picture could be an image of some or any kind, but I would say the word could be used as a synonym for a situation or scenario in some cases eg. "Get the picture" or "Understand the wider picture".
So, in one way, a photo can be a picture, but in another way, a picture can't necessarily be a photo.

They are very similar and in English can be used to describe the same thing e.g " do you want to look at my pictures" when showing them your photos. But if you remember that a picture is something you look at and a photo something you can handle, you cant go wrong.

I think of a painting as a picture, A photo is a photo, and you can certainly photograph a picture.
A picture is also a Jug containing water, you could photograph that too, or still life paint a picture of it.
It is not easy sometimes to see the whole picture or photograph it as it appears, but as the facts emerge the pieces of the picture start to fit.
Was that different?

Not the same as a picture might be a painting whereas a photo can be nothing but a photograph.

Photographs are images captured either on film or digitally. Whereas pictures are created using any medium. Photographs are often refered to as pictures because they too fall into the category of any medium. So really when you look at the end result is there really a difference? Not really.

I think a picture can only be produced by painting whilst a photo is taken by a camera.

well, it depends i think on the scenorio. thy are so very similar, but in an art gallery if you were to say "can i show you a picture" they would assume a painting. but if you were just walking on the street an said the same thing the person would assme a photo

When I was a kid in the UK we used to go to the pictures, meaning cinema, a term not used now, its eiher cinema or even movies, which only means 'moving pictures' really, maybe thats where some of the confusion comes from?
