I once read it takes people 3 months to 3 years to get over someone depending on the break-up.You might just be going thru a tough time and you're just thinking of the good times.Remember you said you broke up with him so you must have had your reasons.

When do these waves of cling on come ? is when a relationship is going bad?so the grass seemed greener with that guy.... or do you compare others to him to keep them emotionally distant?
you have to figure out what triggers the memory to get the meaning..maybe he was the right guy at the wrong time or right guy at the right time .. something was right he gave you the gift of love ,that is with you always that you can draw on at will it doesn't have to be any more or less than that...you are lucky..

The best way to get over some one is to get under some one else. This is a metaphor. It is a cliche. Take it as you will. It works from many different points of view.
Or if you really want them. Find them & try to make it work. Do what you think will make you happy.

Focus on other things in your life. Family, work, school...
Get a hobby. Go out and meet new people.
Volunteer your time somewhere........

the bitter fact is that u still love him and are willing to get back to him at any cost.. one small advice i can give is...love without expectation.... god is always watching..... maybe he gets bcak to u....
