No, no guns. If the police carried guns then the criminals in society would also carry guns (more than they do now). I think it would make the whole thing even more dangerous than it is now.

Don't think they carry wooden sticks (staff or truncheon to be more precise). Are they not now all armed with the extending "baton". As for arming them, where have you been lately? We have armed police vehicle patrolling 24 hours a day,(in some areas that is about 50% of vehicles on road) In numerous other areas you see armed police. They appear to be recruiting a different type of person these days to be politically correct. In the past I saw a single police officer face, and cool down a gang of about 25 football "fans" leaving a stadium after losing.. Can you see any of the type of police we have now doing that? Don't think so, at best they would be calling for back up,and, if they were armed and were losing the battle....well. We do not need to fully arm the police, what we need is to allow the proper type of policeman to have some of the old values back.

The carrying of loaded guns is an issue which has been debated widely by the Police Federation. The majority of forces are against carrying weapons but want to keep armed response units. On the whole, most police forces believe rightly, that the public do not want them to carry weapons and neither do they.

I wonder where some of these people get their figures from .I have recently completed thirty years service in the police. The number of armed response units in uk. police forces is so minimal that most people would be shocked.Firearmed trained officers are also minimal and in single figure percentages depending on force area.I would never carry gun and along with a large number of officers would have packed the job in first

I do not think that the ordinary police officers should carry guns there are too many of them who abuse their powers with a baton at the moment.

Can you imagine what these idiots would do if they were allowed to shoot people legally

They Murder enough people every year without guns as it is.

Neither, the local bobby, as we call them, should be built like the proverbial and have big fists for smacking the unruly kids round the ear hole like they used to back when I was a young lad.

They earnt the respect of us youngsters then by being local, knowing us and us knowing them. they didn't need any weapons.

In the instances where more protection is needed or serious criminals are involved then rightly the police have on call the armed respose units

No guns, anytime or anywhere is the only sensible answer. Shooting someone should be the very last resort and I fear that sadly too many people may be trigger happy, even through nerves. As for the public being allowed to carry guns, that's just stupid....

I would not trust a lot of officers with firearms, and the federation did a survey and most colleagues do not want to carry them either. even thought the knife and gun culture is becoming rife in the UK we have specialist officers who deal with spontaneous firearms incidents, and they do a grand job, they tend to go for the none lethal option if possible, but are prepared to shoot to kill if necessary

I am English and in todays crime ridden society, where violent crime is the more the norm; i believe our police officers should - on a daily basis be armed if they want. If the officer wants to carry a gun on Wednesday that is HIS/HER choice, but unfortunately i don't think the senior officers (safe in their offices) will allow that!
