Alright, I will try to keep this simple. We have a puppy, and being a puppy, she gets VERY excited when company comes over. She loves to jump on people and squeal and she just gets VERY wound up. We are trying to train her manners, she has been very good with all of her tricks and other training, but this is a tough one.
Needless to say, my husband's kids are coming over today, and he promised them a surprise (the dog, of course. we have been keeping her hidden from the kids.)
Their mother is very..... strict, and, if they so much as go home with a scratch she will raise you know what. I know that she doesn't mind if they have a puppy, but I am terrified of the dog jumping on the kids. They are both 6, and the puppy is 10# Is there anything that I can buy at the pet store, or the drug store that I can give her to slow her down for today? I don't want to make her sleep or anything, just something to sedate her a little bit so she isn't as rambunctious as usual. Something SAFE. Thanks

BEST thing to do, is tire her out... give her the walk of a lifetime, run her, play with her, throw balls, if your tired get the hubby to do it. Do it till she can do it no more. Then when the kids come over, put her on the leash. Bring her too the kids dont let her run to them. Get the leash around her neck high up till right under the ears and throat. Then have her sit down BEFORE the kids come over to her. Have the kids pet her as calmly as they can, which i know is hard since they are children and will be excited. There excitment will only cause her to become more and more excited. Try to keep a firm grip on the leash and everytime she trys to jump up, firmly pull her more to the ground, making her sit down. Use a firm no, tell the kids your trying to teach her good manners and they need to help you too, so they dont get upset that you arent letting her off the leash, but you want to train her well and should start from the very begining.

Contrary to what everyone is saying, your vet CAN give you a sedative for your pup that will be safe. My friend's cat was given a prescription for them when she was traveling a long distance by car with the animal, and did not want him becoming distressed or edgy.
This will, however, make the dog slightly dopey. She will be concious but she might seem a bit sleepier than normal. I would speak with your vet.
I wouldn't personally resort to drugging the animal. She should calm down after the initial excitement of having company about. You should have someone restrain the dog so that she can meet the kids and get her licks in, and then give her some downtime to settle (with your or your husband keeping her from jumping meanwhile). Don't remove her from the room and then let her back out. It will just trigger the excitement again.

l think that you should talk to your vet, there is nothing that is safe for your dog that you can buy without the vet checking her and giving you something for it his self. you must train the puppy to settle down. and that is the best way, not drugs. when the kids come over , you hold the puppy then let them pet it. then put the puppy back in the bedroom. l can not understand any one wanting to medicate their dog on their own. l would never do it and l think the vet is the one to do that. they went to school and train to care for other peoples'' pets. so let them take care of the medications. this is a real tender subject about people wanting to medicate their pets on their own. take is dumb.

No sorry you can't sedate a dog. The only thing you can do is buy her something to play with. A good chew toy, try a KONG or a snack like one of those chewies.

hi. i have an 8 months puppy and she get REALLY excited too. What my tariner told me to do to stop her jumping on people is as follows: you gently step on her back paws. She will associate that to the pain it causes and eventually she will stop. Don't push it too hard of course justa tiny bit to let her understand that shes doing something wrong. My puppy used to pee everytime too but she outgrown that eventually. PHEW!

when you hear the door bell or are expecting guests,,, the leash must be put on the dog..... you will have contro,l and can opt to have her sit... ALWAYS keep the leash on her when guests come,, you can let it drag behind her if you want- ask her to sit- when she is sitting the guests may pet her... or you can simply keep her in her crate when guests arrive and let her out after an hour after she has become accustomed to their voices and scents etc,

Not a good idea to sedate your dog unless its for their safety! As for calming her down, the easiest and hardest way is to wear it out! If it is tired it wont jump, dig, etc,it eases most common dog problems. Also as for jumping, when she jumps on anyone-ignore her, it wont seem to work straight away, but its did work on my jack russles (high energy jumpers!)
Hope this helps
